AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Two members of the Amherst College baseball team have earned regional recognition for their outstanding performances in the 1998 season. The team concluded the year with a 21-9 record after jumping out to a 9-1 start after spring training, 8-0 against Division III opponents. Both student-athletes will return for the 1999 baseball campaign.
Junior Mike Sweeney (Keene, NH) was named to the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) Division III All-New England Third Team. The righthander finished the season as the team's leading pitcher with a 6-2 record and 2.48 ERA. In his first two starts, Sweeney fanned 10 batters in 13.0 innings while claiming a pair of wins. He finished the season with 46 strikeouts in 54.1 innings pitched, including complete game victories over NESCAC rivals Trinity College and Williams College. Sweeney will take over starting quarterback duties next fall for Lord Jeff football before closing out his collegiate baseball career.
Sophomore Hugh Quattlebaum (Andover, MA) earned All-League honors by a vote of coaches in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). Quattlebaum of one of only two sophomores selected to the 11-man team, listed below. The third-baseman finished the season as the team's fourth leading hitter with a .345 average, driving in 25 runs with the help of seven home runs, including a grand slam against Trinity. Quattlebaum led the team with nine stolen bases, and he is also a guard for Amherst basketball with a team-leading 40 steals last season.
