AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Senior attackman Andy Neviaser (Germantown, MD) posted a career-high four goals, including the game-winner, to lead Amherst College (9-6) to a 13-12 victory over archrival Williams College (8-5) on Hitchcock Field.
Neviaser kicked off scoring on the opening face-off with the first goal just 10 second into the game. Amherst led 5-2 after one quarter, but Williams outscored the Jeffs 5-1 in the second toward a 7-6 advantage on the first goal of the day by sophomore midfielder Andrew Jones.
The Jeffs tied the match at 7-7 with a shot by junior attackman Kyle Bohannon (Boca Raton, FL). Both teams traded goals toward a 10-10 tie heading into the final 15 minutes.
Junior quad-captain Todd Nichols (Skaneateles, NY) registered Amherst's 11th goal 40 seconds into the final quarter, but senior midfielder James Bell answered less than a minute later for Williams. Payson Bullard (Wilton, CT) notched his third goal of the day with 13:57 left to play, and Neviaser closed out Amherst scoring 1:57 later for a 13-11 Amherst lead.
Williams fought back for the remainder of the game, and Bell's third goal cut the Amherst advantage to 13-12 with 5:04 left to play. But a tenacious defense and 13 saves by rookie keeper Corey Simonson (Brookline, MA) preserved the lead for Amherst's first regulard season victory over Williams in a decade. Junior goalie John Servidea stopped 11 of Amherst's 36 shots.
