Amherst Defeats Mount Holyoke, 6-2

AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Every starter registered at least one hit as Amherst College (25-5) posted a 6-4 victory over Mount Holyoke College (2-16). Sophomore centerfielder Allison Schwarting (Los Angeles, CA) went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and two stolen bases.

Junior leftfielder Vicki Gonzalez (Miami, FL) ripped a triple in the third inning before scoring the first run of the game on a single by rookie catcher Meghan Nelson (Middletown, CT). A double by sophomore DH Liza Feldman (Sudbury, MA) brought Nelson home for a 2-0 Amherst lead.

Mount Holyoke responded in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs as the Lyons took advantage of three Lord Jeff errors. Rookie shortstop Jeanne Kenaley (Mansfield, MA) reached first on a throwing error and advanced to third on a passed ball. Sophomore centerfielder Stephanie Douchette (Lisbon Falls, ME) registered a single for the Lyons first hit, and a Olivia Velez (Cortland Manor, NY) single drove both Lyons home to tie the game at 2-2.

Rookie second-baseman Carline Kelly (South Dartmouth, MA) drove in the game-winner with a single in the fourth. Senior co-captain Jen Shea (Hatfield, MA) earned the win as she struck out six . Jillian McCarthy (Machias, ME) takes the loss for the Lyons.

Amherst next hosts Coast Guard in a doubleheader tomorrow at 3:30pm. Mount Holyoke concludes its 1998 campaign with a 2-16 mark.
