Game Notes: Amherst College won its first NCAA Tournament game with a 3-1 victory over Tufts in the opening game of the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championship at Bridgewater State College. The Jeffs broke open a scoreless game in the top of the fifth as they scored two runs on a sacrifice bunt RBI by Meghan Nelson (Middletown, CT) and an infield single by Darcy Sweeney (Keene, NH). Amherst pitcher Allison Schwarting (Los Angeles, CA) helped herself in the top of the seventh by hitting a sacrifice fly for an insurance run. Tufts's lone run came in the bottom of the fifth when Randee McArdle (East Nassau, NY) led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice by Cloe Axelson (Wethersfield, CT).
Amherst's Schwarting scattered four hits on the day as she earned her 17th win of the season. Tufts's Stephanie Gale (Woodbury, NJ) drops to 10-4 on the year. Amherst now plays No. 1 seed Bridgewater State at 9:00am on Friday in a game that was postponed because of weather conditions.

Bridgewater was bolstered by the four-hit pitching of freshman Tammy Webber (32-5) in the 1-0 shutout. Bridgewater scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Angela Vecchione led off with a triple to right center and came home on an RBI single by Jamie Roach.
Amherst (31-8) advanced to the finals earlier in the day when the Jeffs came from behind in dramatic fashion in the 10th inning to defeat Wheaton College 4-3. Both teams scored two runs in the ninth inning to take it into the tenth. Wheaton shortstop Jessica Johnson then led off the inning with a home run to left field. Amherst came right back in their half with shortstop Liza Feldman hitting an RBI double to centerfield to score two runs to win the game. Wheaton ended its season at 38-12.

Bridgewater State Defeats Amherst (1-0) to Win NCAA Division III New England Championship
BRIDGEWATER, Massachusetts -- Bridgewater State College (35-9) defeated Amherst College 1-0 in the championship game of the NCAA Division III Women's Softball New England Regionals. The winner advances to the NCAA Championship Finals in Salem, Virginia, May 14-18. The Finals is an eight-team, double-elimination tournament. It will be Bridgewater State's second trip to the Championship finals, with its first coming in 1994.
