Men's Basketball Splits Pair of GamesMulvey led the way for Amherst against NESCAC rival Hamilton with 19 points. However, Hamilton out-rebounded the Jeffs 53-35 and drew a series of late-game fouls, including one with just three seconds on the game clock that decided a 73-72 Continental victory. The teams had battled through nine ties and 14 lead changes as the Lord Jeff bench outscored the Continental bench 34-6 to rally Amherst from an early deficit to a 72-70 lead with 1:10 left in the game on a three-point play by center Josh Anish (Huntingdon, PA). Anish proved to be a menace in the paint as he disrupted the shooting of Hamilton's big men while dropping in 14 points of his own, 12 in the second half. Ingraham and Hugh Quattlebaum (Andover, MA) combined for 20 from the perimeter. Quattlebaum also led the team with 10 boards and three steals.
The Jeffs have nearly a week to prepare for their next NESCAC weekend as Amherst hosts Colby and Bowdoin on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Amherst has fallen to Colby during the regular season for the last four years, but the Jeffs avenged three of the losses in the post-season as Amherst has knocked the White Mules out of two NCAA tournaments and an ECAC Championship since the 1993-94 season.

Hersey registered a career high 31 points to shut down Wesleyan. The junior tied her own record for most free throws made in a single game with 13, while also making four steals in the winning effort. Amherst had closed out the first half behind the sharp-shooting of Hersey and senior center Sarah Rinaldi (Washington, DC) with a 13-2 run for a 33-31 lead at the break. Rinaldi pitched in 16 points and eight rebounds while sophomore Naomi Sullivan (Hudson, MA) made four steals and dished out three assists.
Hosting Norwich two days later, Amherst struggled with early turnovers, committing 22 for the game, 13 in the first half alone. A 3-pointer by junior captain Janinne Noel (Dalton, MA) gave Amherst a brief lead early in the second half, but the perimeter shooting of the Cadets quickly reclaimed the advantage toward a 71-63 win. Rinaldi posted a career-high 27 points and pulled down 13 rebounds for the Jeffs while making three steals and two blocks.
Traveling to Hamilton for a NESCAC showdown, Amherst brought home a 76-40 victory to bring its league record to 2-3. Hersey, Rinaldi and Noel all posted double-figures, including 15 of Rinaldi's 17 points in the second half. Noel also dished out five assists.
Facing Wesleyan the next day, Amherst found itself facing a 3-0 deficit early in the second before Darce Swaggert (Wayzata, MN) kicked off Lord Jeff scoring. Noone's seventh power play goal of the season cut the lead to one with less than two minutes left in the second, but the Cardinals posted their fatal fourth goal with 37 seconds left to the period toward a 4-2 win.
Earlier in the week, both teams had cruised to victories over Smith and at Brown. David McNeely (Newton Square, PA) pushed his season record to a perfect 7-0 as he and the men's team prepare to host six-time defending national champion Harvard on Wednesday. Last year, the Jeffs fell just 5-4 in Amherst before a 6-3 loss to the Crimson at Nationals.
Coming off one Little III victory at Williams, women's basketball hit the road for another trivalry win at Wesleyan, 72-61. The Jeffs posted a 2-1 week as both wins came against NESCAC opponents on the road as catalyzed by the outstanding play of ECAC, NESCAC and NEWBA Player of the Week Katie Hersey (Westford, MA). This is the second time this seaosn that the junior forward has received this trio of honors as she averaged 21.7 points and 13.0 rebounds per game. Hersey currently has 12 double-doubles for the season, 26 for her career as she is on pace to become only the fifth woman in Amherst history to break the 1,000 point mark. She is currently sixth on the all-time scorers' list with 882 points.

Men's ice hockey dropped a pair of ECAC East games to NESCAC rivals as the Jeffs fall to 9-9-1 overall, 7-7-1 in the league. The Jeffs opened the weekend with a 1-0 lead on Trinity off a Mike Noone (Swampscott, MA) goal, but the Bantams scored a pair early in the second period for a one-goal advantage. Rookie Robbie Hill (Averill Park, NY) notched the equalizer at the 4:50 mark, but Trinity answered with a trio of goals in the third, including an empty-net-er as Amherst had pulled goalie Chris Addesa (Andover, MA) for the extra skater.

After pummeling a series of opponents in the past few weeks, Amherst suffered a similar punishment at the hands of Middlebury and Vermont as the Jeffs were outscored 21-1 this weekend. Rookie Gretchen Bowe (Hampstead, NH) tallied the first goal of the weekend with the help of Emma Lincoln (Garrett Park, MD) and senior co-captain Jess Frisch (Bethesda, MD) to take a 1-0 lead on defending Alliance Champion Middlebury, who retaliated with a dozen scores on 61 shots. Netminder Cindy Matsushita (Bronx, NY) made 49 saves against the Panthers. Amherst was shut out for only the second time all year as Vermont brought nine goals into Orr Rink.

Men's and women's squash each posted 3-0 weeks and successfully defended their Little III titles in the newly renovated Davenport Squash Courts, which had the Vickery Exhibition Court and the Serues Court officially dedicated just hours before the Championship started. Both teams swept Wesleyan to open up the day before Williams did likewise in the second set of matches. The crown would come down to the final match, a meeting of archrivals that Amherst would win, the women's third straight year and fourth for the men. While the men cruised to an 8-1 decision over the Ephs, the women were tied 4-4 with only senior Justine O'Connor (Brooklyn, NY) left at No. 3 to decide the title. Though she had fallen in the first two games, the co-captain had posted 9-1, 9-0 wins in games three and four before the decisive fifth, which O'Connor won 9-3.
