NCAA National Championships - Mar 9-10
Martha Nelson in the 1500 and Laurel Kilgour in the 800 were Amherst's
representatives at the National Championships in OshKosh Wisconsin. Martha
started things off with her semi final where she raced up in the top 3
for the majority of the race hitting 400 and 800 splits of 73.4 / 2:31
before taking the lead at the 1200 (3:47) and eventually finishing 5th
in 3:43.87, and advancing to the finals on Saturday on the basis of time
(top 3 automatically and the next 4 fastest times advance). In the final,
legs a little bit tired from the night before, she ran in the middle of
the pack through 800m (2:29) before she started to feel the effects of
the hard effort the nite before and finished 10th overall in a time of
3:48.75. Laurel led her qualifying section of the 800m through the first
600 (splits of 31.8-200 / 65.6- 400 / 1:40.2- 600) before feeling
the effects of the burdening task of front running and finished 6th in
2:20.07 and 12th overall.
ECAC's - Mar 3
The men and women competed in the ECAC Championships at Boston University
- the first time that the meet has been a combined men's and women's meet
(in the past, the men would start their meet at the conclusion of the women's
meet). The men finished their season, while the women have one or two individuals
who will be competing at the NCAA's this weekend. The men's relays were
the highlight of the championships as both relays earned All-ECAC honors.
Breaking out the new speed suits, the 4 x 400 quartet of Brian Hart, Robert
Long, Janak Chandrasoma and Jared Moshe placed 3rd in their section and
4th overall with their fastest clocking of the season and finishing just
outside of the school record. The 4 x 800 relay of Andy Schneider, Mike
Page, Ben Kozyak and John Stanton-Geddes easily won their section, aided
by 1:56 leg from Ben, and not only dropped nearly 30 seconds off their
best time of the season but also placed 6th overall, displacing many teams
from the fast section. John matched his 4:00 1500 from 2 weeks ago, as
he placed 7th overall, and Mike Page ran a solid race in the earlier section.
Jared and Robert finished 1st and 2nd in their section of the 400 - seperated
by a mere .01, Janak Chandrasoma raced to a team leading mark and a season
PR in the 200, Pat Hayes finished 2nd in his section of the hurdles but
issed the finals by 2 spots, Paul Whiting - competing in both track and
baseball for the last 3 weeks finished off the season with a solid jump
in the triple jump.
The women got off to a fast start in their very first event as 3 women
earned All-ECAC (Top 8) honors in the 3000. Katie Famous set a new PR en
route to her 5th run and Ali Dimon was right on her heels in 6th place,
and Erinn White (battling bronchitis) managed to grab the last placing
spot. Rebecca Woo was a very bright spot for the team as she started
what was to be a long but very successful day with a great race in the
1500 that lead to a new PR, then earned All-ECAC honors in the 1000m with
a great race and if two races were not enough, she led off the 4 x 800
team which would place 4th. The 4 x 800 team of Woo, Molly Burnett, Jamie
Newman and Annie Perez had a great race as they placed 4th overall to earn
All-ECAC honors. Emily Lobsenz had a great 5k as she patiently raced to
her 2nd best time and finished in 3rd to grab ECAC honors.Kate Hamill ran
her fastest 500m to finish in 4th overall and just missed breaking the
school record. The Distance Medley Relay team of Laurel Kilgour, Amie Shei,
Kate and Martha Nelson hoped to earn a spot at the national meet this weekend
but did not run the time needed but still raced great and managed to finish
5th in a stellar field. The DMR was the alst event of the day and so an
entire day of waiting and anticpating the relay may have taken its toll
on the team. Molly ran a strong 1500 and then had an outstanding leg in
the 4x800 relay - despite not training for the mid-distance races.
Open New Englands - Feb 23-24
(Student
Article)
Both teams competed against the top schools in all of New England - the
men at Boston University and the women at Tufts. The women finished 13th
in the overall scoring and had several spectacular performances including
two new school records and an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Martha
Nelson eclipsed the old mile record and qualified provisionally for the
NCAA meet as she finished 7th to earn All-New England honors. Laurel Kilgour
established a new school record in the 800m in her qualifying section of
the 800 on friday, and then went on to finish 4th in the finals to earn
All-New Englnad honors for the 2nd year in a row. Becca Woo not only ran
her fastest 1000 ever, but also earned the coveted All-NE honors by virtue
of her 7th place finish. Molly Burnett, not wanting to be outdone by PR's
and All-New England distinction joined the club by finishing 6th in the
3k with a personal best. The Distance Medley Relay of Molly, Amie Shei,
Kate Hamill and Martha finished 5th and narrowly missed the NCAA provisional
mark despite a dropped baton at the beginning of the race. The 4 x 800
Relay of Annie Perez, Marth, Laurel and Kate finished the weekend with
a 7th place finish, and one last All-NE distinction as they raced to a
seasonal best time. Katie Famous broke 18:30 for the first time in the
5k to set a new PR; Kate Hamill - in addition to two solid relay 800's
also found time to set a new PR in her section of the 800 qualifying rounds.
The men were across the city, competing at BU, and the highlights were
the seasonal best time for the 4x400 relay as Brian Hart, Robert Long,
Janak Chandrasoma and Jared Moshe all ran sub 51 legs and easily ran away
with their section. Pat Hayes missed making the semi-finals by two people
in the 55 Hurdles but did set a new PR as he dipped under the 8 second
barrier for the first time. John Stanton-Geddes raced well in the mile
to finish 4th in his section, and then came back later to lead off the
Distance Medley Relay consisting of hmiself, Jared Moshe (400), Ben Kozyak(800
- 1:59) and Mike Page(1600) as they ran their fastest time of the season.
DIII New Englands - Feb 17th
(Student
Article)
The men competed at Tufts, while the women were competing at Brandeis at
their respective DIII Championships. The men were led by freshmen 1500
runners John Stanton-Geddes and Mike Page. Blessed by a small field which
allowed them to get into the meet, they both took full advantage as they
not only ran to huge PR's but John also was able to earn All-New England
status with his 5th place performance. Robert Long, quiet early in the
season but coming alive in the last two weeks, qualified for the finals
in the 400 with his best time of the season and then earned All-New England
status with his 6th place finish, and then came back to run another solid
race (his 3rd 400 of the day) to help the 4 x 400 team of Brian Hart, Jared
Moshe and Janak Chandrasoma easily win their section of the relay and place
4th overall. The Distance Medley Relay team of Page, Stanton-Geddes, Ben
Kozyak and Mike Sypkens finished 5th to earn All-New England accolades
- with a great 400 leg by Sypkens. Pat Hayes missed making the finals in
the 55 H by .05. Having just missed making a New England/ECAC qualifier
in the triple jump, Max Woolf headed to the USATF New England Championships
and on his final attempt, jumped 42-2.75 to mae the ECAC standard and extend
his season.
The women earned a Top Ten team finish behind an exciting 4 x 800 Relay
win over Williams by .03 seconds and a couple of school records. The 4
x 800 team of Annie Perez, Becca Woo, Laurel Kilgour and Kate Hamill ran
neck and neck with the Williams quarter the entire race, and Kate was just
able to stave off a last second surge by the Williams anchor leg. Earlier
in the 600m, Kate smashed the school record by nearly 2 seconds to finish
4th. Martha Nelson, running just her second 3000m, not only finished 2nd
but also broke the former school record by 1.4 seconds. Also in the 3000,
Katie Famous, ALi Dimon and Erinn White (new PR) raced together the entire
race and came in one after the other. In the 5000, Amherst picked up three
All-New England accolades as Emily Lobsenz sped to a new personal record
to finish 4th, and Molly Burnett (setting a new PR as well) and Hilary
Plum finished 5th and 8th; in the 800, Laurel Kilgour ran at the back of
the pack through the opening 400 before taking off with a huge move to
take the lead and then held it nearly the rest of the way en route to running
a seasonal best and Annie Perez earned All-New England status as she won
her section and placed 8th on time; Amie Shei had her fastest time
of the season in the 400 and picked up All-New England honors with her
8th place finish; Helen Dole completed her first pentathlon and set
PR's in 3 of the 5 events; Jamie Newman and Aly Venti each qualified for
the ECAC's with their performances in the 1000.
Smith Invite- Feb 10th
(Student
Article) (Pictures
from Mr.Perez)
Both the men and women competed as a full squad and together for the last
time, as we now roll into the championship portion of the season. The meet
was a non scoring invitational, and provided a great chance for some excellent
performances for everyone and last meet qualifiers. The men were highlighted
by the Cooper - Santos showdown in the 600m, where Coop reclaimed the "Dominant
Force" title as he raced to a huge PR and nearly won the race with his
finishing kick. John Stanton-Geddes and Mike Page went 1-2 in the 1500;
Jared Moshe looked like his old self in the 400 as he ran to w in and was
followed by a resurgent Robert Long in 2nd and Brian Hart, running his
first 400 finished 4th; Janak Chandrasoma despite being sick all week was
able to claim victory in the 200 by .01 as he and Greg Baker went 1 &
3 with both hitting ECAC qualifying times; Brett Richey runing at the front
nearly the whole race claimed vistory in the 1000 as he and Andy Schneider
went 1-2; Max Woolf finished 2nd in the triple jump with a mark of 41-5
but, negated by slight fouls, put some bombs into the pit and will build
on that confidence as we head outdoors; the 4x400 finished first as the
team of Hart, Moshe, Chandrasoma and Long continued to battle mid race
problems and will hope to rid the demons of the past this weekend at DIII
NE's; Pat Hayes raced to 3rd in the 55 Hurdles; Alex Lenkoski and Carson
Taylor went 2-3 in the 5k with each racing great and running season best
times; James Johndrow, battling a nagging back injury, raced tough to finish
5th in the 3k while Rusty Ryan was setting a new PR just behind; Ben Kozyak
finished 4th in the 800.
The women were led by a pair of relay wins as the 4x400 quartet of Amie
Shei, Annie Perez, Laurel Kilgour and Kate Hamill ran their seasonal best
time and the 4x800 foursome of Aly Venti, Jamie Newman, Aparna Nancherla
and Becca Woo demolished the field in their race. Individual winners for
Amherst wire to wire winners in the 3k and 1000, as Molly Burnett and Laurel
Kilgour looked strong to run away with their events. In the 3k, we went
1-2-3-6 as Emily Lobsenz, Erinn White and Anne McNamara ran to season bests
and PR's for Erinn and Anne; Martha Nelson raced to her best time in the
1500 despite being tripped up and falling to the track late in the race
and Katie Famous ran to a new best time inthe same race; Annie Perez and
Becca Woo finished 3rd and 4th in the 800 as each ran their fastest times
of the season; Kate Hamill dropped down to the 200 and 400 and placed 4th
and 3rd respectively with the teams fastest times of the season in the
events; Helen Dole and Aparna Nancherla went 2-4 in the 600 and Helen started
her day with her best triple jumping of the year and qualified for New
Englands; Ali Dimon went under 19 minutes in the 5k as she continues to
get stronger with each week; Ali Stahl placed 5th in the long jump but
looked like her 17 foot form on her last 2 attempts and should turn some
heads this weekend.
Tufts Invite II - Feb 3rd
(Student
Article)
Both teams competed well in the 9 team Tufts Invite as the women finished
5th and the men 7th. The women were led by Martha Nelson's victory in the
3000, which she ran for the first time and despite her inexperience she
established a new track record. Alison Dimon, on the comeback from a late
fall stress fracture ran a solid time in the 3k to finish 4th. Helen Dole
- seemingly every where on the track had an outstanding high jump and improvements
in both the long jump and 55 hurdles to qualify for the pentathlon at New
Englands, as well as earning a 5th place finish in the 500 and anchoring
the 4x400 relay. The 5k was a strong event for us as Emily Lobsenz, Katie
Famous and Hilary Plum went 4,5 and 6th with the first two making the Open
NE standard and Hilary missing by a mere.2 and then joined with Erinn White
to blaze the track in the 4 x 200; the 800 saw Kate Hamill and Laurel Kilgour
go 4 and 5 in season best times; Molly Burnett and Becca Woo both went
well under 5:00 in the 1500 to finish 4th and 6th; Amy Shei finished 4th
in the 400 and ran the 400 leg of the second place DMR team consisting
of Kilgour (1200), Hamill (800) and Burnett(1600), Becca Woo and Aly Venti
doubled back from the 1500 to earn points in the 1000 - an event which
also saw Jamie Newman make the DIII Standard.
The men were led by the 3rd place finish of the DMR which consisted
of Mike Page(1200), Mike Sypkens(400), ANdy Schneider(800) and John Stanton-Geddes
in the 1600 leg. John ealrier placed 4th in the 1000 with a season best
time, and the event also went well for Ben Kozyak who grabbed the 8th place
in his first race of the season. Pat Hayes finished 5th in the 55H in a
very talented field; Jared Moshe seems to be returning to the form that
has earned him All-New England honors as he led the 400m before fading
to 6th and then running a solid lead off leg of the 4x400 - a dropped baton
in the middle of the race ended any hopes for a victory; Greg Baker finished
7th in the 55m; Mike Sypkens ran a great race in the 500m to grab 6th place;
Rusty Ryan raced strong in the 5k to PR despite a penultimate lap reprieve;
Mike Page and Andy Schneider raced well in the 800 and in the earlier heat
of the 800, Jay Santos proved he is the dominant force in the Tos-Coop
Battle as he sat on Jake Coopers shoudler before blasting to a 2 second
victory in the last lap. The men's 4 x 200 of Eric Osborne, Paul Whiting,
Julius Nanna and Robbin Williams set a new school record in placing 4th.
Wesleyan Invite - Jan 26th
(Student
Article)
Competing in a rare Friday nite invitational, both squads looked impressive
as they finished 2nd (W) and 3rd (M) in the over all team scoring in the
15 team meet. The meet also comes at the conclusion of our intersession
period, as classes resume on Monday, and the heavy training is now completed.

picked up points in the 1000; Aly Venti and Ali Dimon eached qualified
for DIII NE's with their 3rd and 5th place performance in the 1500; in
the 3k, following just behind Molly were Katie Famous and Emily Lobsenz
with both running under 11 minutes.
Pat Hayes led the men with his victory in the 55 Hurdles, nearly dipping
under the 8 second barrier for the first time. Jared Moshe finished 2nd
in the 400 with Phile Jones also picking up points; first years John Stanton-Geddes
and Mike Page went 2-3 in the 1500 and then both came back to pick up points
in the 1000 and 800 as well as joining with Jake Cooper and Andy Schneider

jump; Janak Chandrasoma and Greg Baker each earned points in the 200; James
Johndrow led the distance runners with his 4th place finish in the 3k;

in the 600m; Jared and Janak teamed up with Brian Hart and Robert Long
in the 4 x 400 relay and finished 2nd.
Brandeis Invite - Jan 20th
(Student
Article)
Both the men and women, with full squads, got 2001 officially under way
at the Brandeis Invite with the women finishing 2nd and the men in 5th
in the overall team scoring. For the women, Kate Hamill nearly took down
the 600m record as she cruised to victory in 1:40.87 and was followed in
3rd by Helen Dole - who also placed 6th in the triple jump. Laurel Kilgour
led Annie Perez and Aparna Nancherla to a 1,3,4 finish in the 800. Martha
Nelson and Becca Woo each ran PRs in the 1500 to finish in 3rd and 5th,
with Ali Dimon running 5:11 despite limited running due to injury recovery.
Amie Shei finished 5th in the 400 and also ran a strong leg on the 2nd
place 4 x 400 (Perez, Kilgour and Hamill). Aly Venti finished 2nd in the
1000 and came back to run a leg of the victorious 4 x 800 relay with Woo,
Nancherla and Nelson. Molly Burnett raced to a big PR in the 5000(18:23)
to finish 3rd, just ahead of Emily Lobsenz and Katie Famous. Hilary Plum
- in her first race for Amherst - led for most of the 3000 and finished
3rd with a new PR, with Erinn White finishing 6th.
The men were led by runner-up finishes from Jared Moshe (400m), John
Stanton-Geddes (800) and Pat Hayes (55 Hurdles) as well as the 4 x 400
team of Jared, Janak Chandrasoma, Brian Hart and Phil Jones. Jared led
for most of the 400m until being passed at the line, and then came back
to finish 3rd in the 200 before his strong anchor leg in the relay. James
Johndrow returned to the track for the first time since high school (injured
all of last year and this fall) and made his PR effort in the 3k look easy.
Paul Whiting, despite some early trouble with the pit, popped a 43 foot
jump to finish 3rd in the triple jump followed by Max Woolf (41-5) and
Julius Nanna (40-5). Janak made his collegiate 400 debut a good one as
he easily won his section and finished in 5th overall, before leading off
the relay with a strong leg.
Holiday Classic - Tufts, Dec 9th
Both teams, though not the full squads, got the season kicked off at the
Tufts Holiday Classic. Despite the small numbers - majority of the middle
and long distance runners sat out - those competing put up some excellent
marks considering we have not gotten on the track yet. The women were led
by Martha Nelson and Kate Hamill's victories in the 1500 and 800 respectively.
Martha, in her first track race in nearly 2 years made a big move heading
into the bell lap and pulled away for her first college win in a quick
5:02. Kate Hamill was in cruise control before making her move in the later
stages to run away comfortably in 2:26 with Helen Dole finishing just behind
her in 5th place. Katie Famous ran to her 5k PR of 18:46 as she grabbed
a third place finish.
The men were led by freshman John Stanton-Geddes victory in the 1000,
as he and fellow first year Mike Page went 1-2 in that event after having
run 1500 PR's earlier in the meet. Janak Chandrasoma, another strong first
year runner, finished 2nd in the 200 as well as having an outstanding leg
in the 4 x 400 relay (teamed with Robert Long, Phil Jones and Jared Moshe)
to help the team to its second place finish. A trip of triple jumpers -
Paul Whiting, Max Woolf and Julius Nanna - led by Paul's 5th place
jump, all went over the 40 foot barrier despite not having jumped into
the pits yet this fall. Greg Baker finished 6th in the 55 meters, while
Jay Santos ran an inpressive 600m for the team. Both teams return to action
in January with the Brandeis Invitational on the 20th.
