ECAC - May 17th and 18th
Both teams competed together for the last meet of the season in the ECAC
Championships at Springfield. A grueling week of final exams, papers and
having to be out of the dorms took its toll on a lot of the team but there
were several highlights. Emily Lobsenz ran a tough, gutsy race in the 10,000
to finish second and improve upon her seasonal best despite doing a large
majority of the work during the race. Rebecca Woo had her breakthrough
race at the right time, as she knocked off nearly 10 seconds from her former
1500 PR and grab a scoring spot out of the slower section, then came back
to run well in the 800 and again donned the spikes to run a leg of the
4 x 400 (Amie Shei, Annie Perez and Kate Hamill) relay that grabbed 5th
and ran a seasonal best time. Amie Shei continued her scoring ways as she
grabbed the 8th and final All-ECAC spot in the 400.
Mike Page just missed breaking his own freshmen school record but did
manage to finish second in the steeplechase with a big finishing kick down
the homestretch to pull away. Pat Hayes was nearly back to his old self
as he continued to recover from a sinus infection but had his best race
of the season to grab 4th place and again just missed breaking the school
record. Jared Moshe finished 6th in the 400 and anchored both the 4 x 100
relay ( Greg Baker, Jank Chandrasoma and Brian Hart) that got 7th
and the 4 x 400 relay of Hart, Chandrasoma and Robert Long that finished
3rd. The 4 x 400 was hoping to improve upon its breakthrough time from
last weekend in order to improve upon its chances for a trip to nationals
but fell a little shy.
Open New Englands - May 11th and 12th
The men's 4 x 400 team of Brian Hart, Robert Long, Janak Chandrasoma and
Jared Moshe not only smashed the old school record by over a second, they
qualified for the NCAA's provisionally in winning their section and finishing
6th overall and first among DIII teams as they scorcehd the track with
a 3:15.91. Hart led off with a 50.4 and the next three legs all split 48.5
as they took the lead late in the 3rd leg and held it for the remainder
of the race. In addition to the awesome relay performance, Jared and Robert
were 4th and 5th in their section of the 400 heats, Janak was 2nd in his
qualifying section and missed the finals by one spot with his 22.18, the
4 x 100 relay finished one spot away from the finals as Greg Baker, Janak,
Brian and Jared ran their fastest time of the season and look to ECAC's
to try and break the current school record, Mike Page had a strong race
as he just missed his PR in the steeplechase, Pat Hayes raced well in the
hurdles despite battling the flu since midweek.
Amie Shei inched closer to the sub 60 mark in the 400 as she ran to
a 60.33 to lead the women who raced at Williams. The 4 x 800 team of Becca
Woo, Aly Venti, Laurel Kilgour and Annie Perez just missed earning All-New
England honors as they placed 9th and had exceptional legs from Aly and
Annie. before running their legs in the 4 x 800, Becca ran to a season
PR in the 1500 and Laurel led her 800 section for the large majority of
the race before finishing 2nd in the section. Kate Hamill and Ali Dimon,
both battled illness to perform strongly in the 400 Hurdles and 5000 respectively.
Ali Stahl fouled on her attemps in the long jump but looked like her old
self with some big jumps and will look to ECAC this week to see how far
she can go.
DIII New Englands - May 4&5th
The men and competed separately for the first time this spring with the
men racing at Connecticut and the women up in Middlebury. Helen Dole kicked
off the competition for the women with the heptathlon and has another great
weekend as she had PR's in several events and scored a 100 point improvement
from her NESCAC performance and placed 9th overall. Amie Shei had a huge
finishing kick to grab 6th place in the 400 and went under the 61 second
barrier for the first time this season. Annie Perez raced to a new PR in
the 800 as she earned All-NewEngland honors with her 6th place performance,
while in the same section Rebecca Woo raced to a season best time. Kate
Hamill ripped the last 150 of her 400 Hurdle race to dip well under 67
seconds and also earn a 6th place and All-New England finish. The 4 x 800
team of Laurel Kilgour, Woo, Hamill and Perez battled the wind as well
as a very large 14 team section to finish 3rd. The wind, constant all day
but not too bad, picked up conisiderably just before the start of the 3000,
but we still had great runs from Ali Dimon, Aly Venti and Erinn White.
Janak Chandrasoma highlighted the men's 10th place finish as he raced
to a new PR in the 200 qualifying section, and then came back even stronger
to run 22.11 and earn 4th place and All-New England distinction. Pat Hayes
continues to prove he is one of the top hurdlers in the region as he finished
4th and was again just off the school record of 15.08. Jared Moshe and
RObert Long each qualified for the 400 finals with stellar runs in the
semi's as both ran in the mid 49's and then came back to grab 6th and 7th
place in the finals. Both relays earned 4th place finishes - the 4 x 100
team changed up the order and the personnel and the team of Greg Baker,
Janak, Brian Hart and Jared ran to their fastest time of the season. The
4x400 team of Hart, Robert, Jared and Janak, despite being obviously tired
from a long day of racing battled again with Williams down the homestretch
and came within .03 seconds of beating them and grabbing 3rd. Greg Baker
was 10th in the 200 while John Stanton-Geddes ran to an 11th place finish
in the 1500.
NESCAC's - April 28 & 29 at Wesleyan

Both teams had several outstanding performances during the course of the
two day meet. For the men, Pat Hayes continued to improve his 110 hurdles
as he not only placed third but lowered his PR nearly half a second and
just missed the school record by .01 seconds. Jared Moshe and Robert Long
both ran great in the open 400 to grab 2nd and 5th and both were handily
under the 50 second barrier, and then they teamed up wtih Brian Hart and
Janak Chandrasoma to finish the day with a very exciting neck and neck
battle with Williams in the 4x400 relay where we ended up 2nd while running
our fastest time in the last 3 years. Mike Page had a great steeple chase
as he not only lowered the freshmen school record by 10 seconds but also
grabbed a 4th place, while Carson Taylor - despite hitting a barrier and
falling on the last lap - still was able to earn 7th place and PR by 15
seconds. Ben Kozyak ran a great race in the 800 as he lowered his best
time of the season and placed 5th overall. In the two sections of the 800
prior to Ben's, it was the black and purple of Amherst at the front as
Andy Schneider won the 1st section with a big kick, and Jake Cooper won
the next section with a big kick down the homestretch. Janak had a great
race in the 200m qualifying heats to earn a spot in the finals where he
plalced 8th; the 4 x 100 relay team of Greg Baker, Janak, Jared and Phil
Jones had a solid race and placed 4th; Rusty Ryan set a new PR in the 5000;
David Yoo just missed making the finals in the long jump despite having
only started to jump within the last week; Eric Osborne and JP Zito raced
to PR's in the 100m during the qualifying sections.
The women's 4 x 800 relay of Annie Perez, Becca Woo, Kate Hamill and
Laurel Kilgour just missed the school record as they finished 2nd overall
with a very fast performance. In the open 800 on Sunday, Laurel led the
fast section for the first 600m and ended up placing 4th with a new school
record time. In the heat before, Annie and Kate battled to the line with
both getting their best times ofthe season. Helen Dole, competing in her
first official heptathlon had a great competition as she PR'd in several
events and would place 6th overall with a score of 3139; Emily Lobsenz
placed 8th in the 10k wiht an NCAA provisional qualifying mark; Alsion
Dimon put forth a tremendous effort and raced her fastest time of the year
in the 5k and grabbed 5th place with Erinn White just missing 8th place
but with a sub 19 minute performance; Amie Shei had a great race in the
400 as she finished 6th with her fastest time of the season and then came
back to lead off the 6th place 4 x 400 relay consisting of herself, Kaurel,
Annie and Kate.
Little Three's - April 21 at Williams
(Student
Article) (Student
Article)
The annual Little Three Championship (Williams, Wesleyan and Amherst) was
held at Williams in beautiful weather, and both teams took advantage of
it. While both the men and the women finished third, they had some great
performances and unique versatility. Helen Dole, tuning up for her first
outdoor heptathlon next weekend, competed in her own hepathlon (7 events)
and got some outstanding marks to improve her qualifying score to 3100+
points. Amie Shei ran her fastest time of the season in the 400 as she
finished 3rd and was followed by Rebecca Woo (coming off the 1500 then
400 double); Ali Stahl utilized her versatility as she raced well in the
100 and 200 as well as finished 3rd in the long jump and also scored points
in the shot put and the triple jump; Laurel Kilgour and Annie Perez ran
their best times of the season it the 800; Ali Dimon and Erinn White battled
the clock in the 3000 with each getting the seasonal bests; Emily Lobsenz
finished 3rd in the 5k and Emily Dubinsky, Hilary Plum and Katie Famous
both made the qualifying marks for DIII New England's and then came back
just after to race the 4 x 100 relay; Kate Hamill had a strong 400 Hurdle
race before joining with Amie, Laurel and Annie in the 4 x400; Martha Nelson,
Becca Woo and Aly Venti competed well in the 1500 with the Amherst contingent
doing the early leading chores.
Pat Hayes was Amherst's lone winner, as he cruised to a victory in the
110 Hurdles with his fastest time of the year - in a race decided by more
then .01. In the 400, Jared Moshe and Robert Long went 2 and 3 with their
best times to date with Jared dipping under the 50 second mark. The 4 x
400 relay, always met with great excitement, lived up to its billing as
Williams and Amherst ran neck and neck throughout the race as Brian Hart,
Long and Janak Chandrasoma matched their Williams counterparts. On the
final exchange, we were down a few steps but coming off the first turn,
Jared picked the pace and moved into the lead until the final turn where
he battled with the Williams runner and position jockeying caused him to
lose the baton. John Stanton-Geddes ran a very smart and gutsy race as
hetook the lead at the bell in the 1500 and finished just off of his personal
best; the 800 - both sections - were a big highlight as Mike Sypkens and
Andy Schneider each raced great in the unseeded section with Sypkens holding
on for the win in a new PR and Unit finishing with a torrid kick down the
stretch to run his fastest time. The seeded section was equally exciting
as Ben Kozyak raced under two minutes and a 4th place finish, looking strong
throughout, while Jake Cooper inched closer to the 2:00 barrier as he ran
2:01 and had a huge finish to inch in front of the Wesleyan runners at
the line; David Yoo proved his versatility as he scored in several events
including 2nd places in the long and high jumps; Eric Osborne and JP Zito
had great 100m races as they placed 3rd and 4th; Julius Nanna jumped to
his seasonal best in the triple jump to place 3rd; Mike Page nearly broke
the freshmen steeplechase record as he finished 2nd and has his eyes set
on the record inthe upcoming meets.
Williams Relays - April 14 at Williams
(Student
Article)
Fearing snow, but getting a beautiful sunny day,
both the men and combined a full slate of individual events and several
rarely run relays to make for a great day of competition. Pat Hayes, making
the photo finish a necessity for the 3rd week in a row, led the men with
a victory by .01 in the 110 Hurdles. In his first three races, his races
have been decided by a combined .03 seconds. Jake Cooper, the ultimate
competitor, laid it on the line and blasted to a big PR in the 800 and
is poised to make a crack at a sub 2:00 800 in the next couple of meets.
Greg Baker finished 2nd in the 100 and came back to run a season best in
the 200, as well as leading off 3 relays - 4x100,4x200 and Sprint Medley.
Amherst finished 2nd in the 4x400 with a stellar effort by Robert Long,
Jared Moshe, Janak Chandarsoma and Brian Hart as they ran to their fastest
time of the season. The sprint medley team of Janak, Brian and Jared teamed
with Ben Kozyak finished 2nd. Carson Taylor raced to a new PR in the 5000
and Julius Nanna, despite a foot injury broke the 40 foot barrier twice
in the triple jump.
The women's distance medley relay of Aly Venti,
Helen Dole, Annie Perez and Rebecca Woo claimed Amherst's lone victory
and set a new school record with their effort. The sprint medley team of
Amie Shei, Ali Stahl, Kate Hamill and Laurel Kilgour earned a runner-up
finish in their race. Rebecca Woo ran to a season best 800 time as she
led Kate Hamill and Helen Dole to sub 2:25 times. Amie Shei and Laurel
Kilgour finished 3 and 4 in the 400m. Aly Venti led the first half of the
1500 and finished in 4th with her best time so far this season. Ali Stahl
was 3rd in the long jump before running a great 400 leg in the 4 x 400.
Emily Dubinsky dipped under the 20 min mark in the 5000 in her first 5k
since last year.
Bantam Invite - April 7 at Trinity
(Student
Article) (Student
Article) (Student
Article)
Both teams compted in a non-scoring invitational
at Trinity and came away with soe strong performances despite the raw conditions.
The 4 x 400 relay of Brian Hart, Jared Moshe, Janak Chandrasoma and Robert
Long capped the meet with a convincing victory. Pat Hayes narrowly missed
a victory in the 110 Hurdles but did manage to set a new PR, and that time
should continue to come down dramatically as the season progresses. Jared
led the 400 runners to 4 of the Top 8 spots with his runner-up finish,
while Long, Chandrasoma and Hart were close behind. Brett Richey had a
strong race in the 1500 and came back with a PR in the 800, with Mike Sypkens
also having a great 800 race winning his section. Greg Baker found 5 to
his liking as he finished 5th in both the 100 and the 200. Mike Page and
Carson Taylor raced the steeplechase for the first time this season, and
posted solid marks - PR for Carson. Rusty Ryan, in his first race outdoors,
managed to set his 5k PR.
The women capped the meet with a second place
finish in the 4 x 400 as Amie Shei, Laurel Kilgour, Annie Perez and Kate
Hamill carried the stick. Kate finished 3rd in the 400 Hurdles, Laurel
and Annie each ran solidly in the 800m to finish in the Top 8, and Amie
had storng races on both the 200 and 400 events. Aly Venti finished 5th
in the 3000, and won her section by a large margin in her first attempt
at the distance. Emily Lobsenz and Hilary Plum finished 2nd and 3rd in
the 10,000 as they posted good early season marks. Ali Stahl placed
6th in the long jump and then came back to run a very quick 200m. Martha
Nelson captured 5th in the 1500, with Ali Dimon having a strong race in
a separate section. Helen Dole was all over the track as she was doing
the javelin, 100h hurdles, 200 and long jump in preparation for the heptathlon.
Not-Smith Invite - Mar 31 at Conn
College
A last minute rescheduling as a result of the continued
cruelty by Mother Nature brought us to Conn College for a 5 team meet with
Conn, Coast Guard, Keene and Trinity rather then competing at neighboring
Smith College for a 30 plus team meet. Both teams competed extremely well,
with many people either trying new events or moving in distances for a
test of strength. The women were led by Molly Burnett's victory and NCAA
provisional time in the 5000 as she led a 1, 3, 4, 5 (Emily Lobsenz, Hilary
PLum and Erinn White) sweep. Martha Nelson led wire to wire in the 3000
(just off the provisional mark for NCAA's) and Becca Woo placed 4th with
her first crack at the distance. Ali Stahl finished 2nd in the long jump
with a great early season mark despite not having jumped into a pit before
the meet, as well as finishing 3rd and 5th in the 100 and 200. Helen Dole
led the 800 assault with her 2:25 and 3rd place finish with Kate Hamill,
Aly Venti, Annie Perez and Amie Shei (first time running the 800) going
5-8. Hamill, running her first 1500 early in the day finished 5th, nearly
breaking the 5:00 barrier and was followed closely byPerez and Venti.
The sprint corps had a big day for Amherst as
they bolted out to fast times in their first meet. The 4 x 100 team of
Greg Baker, Janak Chandrasoma, Jared Moshe and Brian Hart ran to a victory
in 43.3 seconds. Jared and Brian ran neck and neck in the 400 as they ran
to a 2nd and 3rd place finish with both nearly going under 50 sec ( a 2
second PR for Hart), and Janak finishing 5th. The 200 was a lot of Amherst
again as Janak, Jared and Brian all dipped under 23 sec's to go 2-4, and
Greg Baker and Eric Osborne finishing 7-8. The 100m had Greg, Eric and
Kevin Kennard all running 11.4 to finish in the scoring. Brett Richey had
an outstaind race in the 1500 to win his section with a big finishing kick
and looks to be regaining the confidence to make a big breakthrough this
season. Jake Cooper lowered his 800 PR a couple of seconds as he looked
great in his heat, and Robert Long ran to a 7th place finish in the same
event. Mike Page ran a strong 5k to finish 3rd in his first attempt at
the event, with Carson Taylor setting a new PR to finish 6th.
