NCAA's - Mar 14th and 15th (Student
Article)
The women traveled to Depauw University in Greencastle Indiana to compete
in the NCAA Indoor National Championships and came away with outstanding
results. On friday night, the distance medley relay team of Kate Hamill,
Lyndsey Scott, Jessamyn Connell-Price and Carter Hamill got things started.
Entering the meet as the 9th seed, and knowing that All-American accolades
were earned by finishing in the Top Eight, the ladies wasted no time letting
it be known that they were coming home as All-Americans. Kate got the race
started with her 1200 leg and put the team in great position as she went
through the 800 in 2:27, 1000 in 3:03 and handed off the baton in 4th place
with a 3:41 leg. Lyndsey blazed into second place before tying up in the
last stretch to hand off in 3rd place with a 58.4 (probably the fastest
time of the 400 legs in the race). Jess got the stick in third and powered
her way to a 2:17.4 leg, and had a huge finishing kick that brought us
to 3rd at the exchange of the final leg. Carter got out well in her leg
as she passed through the 400 and 800 in 72 and 2:28, and then went through
the 1200 in 3:44 and then dug down hard over the last lap to secure the
7th place finish and All-American honors in a new school record. On Saturday,
while the rest of the girls got to enjoy the meet, Carter laced on the
spikes once again, this time in the 5000. She was the national champion
in the same race last year, but this year entered as the 8th seed in a
very deep race. She went through the mile in 5:18, 3000 in 10:10 and 2
Mile in 10:51 and spent the last mile of the race locked in a fierce battle
with Mariko Tansey-Holbrook of Brandeis for the 5th spot. An all out sprint
in the last stretch earned her 6th place in a new school record time of
17:09.14 and her 6th All-American award. The women competed in two events
and broke two school records and earned All-American honors in both so
it was an excellent weekend.
ECAC's - Mar 7th and 8th (Student
Article & Athletes
of the Week)
Both teams competed together at the ECAC's at Tufts on Friday and Saturday.
On Friday, we only competed in one event but made it count as the Distance
Medley Relay team of Kate Hamill, Lyndsey Scott, Jessamyn Connell-Price
and Carter Hamill got rid of the "oh so close but not quite enough" label
and qualified automatically for the NCAA's. Numerous teams, and various
orders had been used in the last two years but we finally found the right
one as they broke the school record by nearly 13 seconds running a time
of 12:00.67. Kate got things started with a great 1200 leg that included
lots of jostling in the slow early pace and handed off in 3rd place. Lyndsey
closed the gap took the lead in her second lap of the 400 before handing
off in 2nd place with her first ever sub 60 400. Jessamyn kept it close
despite not being at 100% and had a great finishing 100 to close a gap
to within 1-2 seconds of the front group. Carter Hamill, running the longest
leg, burst into the lead of the chase pack (Williams, Bowdoin and Keene)
- all following SUNY Geneseo - and led that group through the first 1/2
mile. With 1 lap to go, and knowing the we needed to run under the automatic
time to make the trip, she was able to find another gear in the last 100m
to help the team dip under the needed 12:01.00.
On Saturday, the remainder of the team got into the action and had some
great performances. The DMR certainly took its toll (late night of racing
and the excitement of making the standard) on those who had run it as they
looked a little bit flat, but everybody else set seasonal bests in their
individual events. John Stanton-Geddes had his best race of the season
as he grabbed a 5th place in the very competitive 1500 and shortly after,
Andrew Schneider duplicated the 5th place finish with his own in the 1000m
as he set a new PR in the process. The 4x800 relay of John and Unit joined
with Fraser Kitchell and Dave Molina to race to an outstanding runner-up
finish in a very exciting race. The ladies got started with the 800 as
Laurel Kilgour ran away with her section of the 800, and a 9th place overall
finish, to run to a seasonal best time of 2:19. Aly Venti and Ginger Polich,
running in the same event but different sections of the 1000 both had very
strong races. Aly raced to her best time and finished 2nd in her heat and
9th overall, just missing scoring by a place, while Ginger used some aggressive
inside maneuvering to race to a 5th finish. Ali Dimon and Jenny Horowitz,
in separate section, both raced strong races in the 3000 with Ali leading
her entire race until the final home stretch but knocking off 10 seconds
from her best time of the year, and Jenny taking a couple of seconds off
of her best time. The 4 x 400 of Lyndsey, Kate, Jessamyn and Ariel Haney,
just missed their own school record by the scantest of margins but grabbed
an 8th place finish, and then 4x800 of Helen Dole, Laurel, Ginger and Carter
grabbed a 6th place finish - and left with a little bit of the track as
Helen was taken out by a fall at the start of the race, but recovered nicely
to run a strong race.
Open New England's - Feb 28 &
Mar 1 (Student
Article)
Both teams competed on Friday and Saturday at the Open New England Championships
- all schools within NE regardless of division - with the women heading
across town to compete at Smith, while the men traveled to Boston University.
The women got off to a great start in the first day of action as every
runner in the individual events set not only seasonal bests but also Indoor
PR's. The first year runners got things started as Ariel Haney nearly broke
61 seconds in the 400 - running 61.05 and grabbing 17th; Jessamyn Conell-Price
dipped under the 1:20 mark in the 500 just missing the school record in
the process of getting 14th place; and Ginger Polich lowered her PR and
inched closer to the 2:20 barrier in the 800. Senior Ali Dimon raced to
her fastest Indoor 5k and second fastest ever as she ran 18:33 to grab
13th place. The Distance Medley Relay quartet of Laurel Kilgour, Lyndsey
Scott, Kate Hamill and Carter Hamill, looking to break under 12 minutes
and qualify for NCAA's automatically did not fare as well as problems in
the first leg with a fall and a dropped baton made the needed time impossible.
Despite the mishap, the final 3 legs were able to race very well to rally
the team to a 14th place finish. The second day was capped by one of the
most incredible relay performances in Amherst history as the 4x800 team
of Ginger Polich, Laurel Kilgour, Jessamyn Conell-Price and Kate Hamill
overcame the fact that they were left out of the fast section and ran completely
alone and unchallenged in the their section to not only grab a runner-up
finish but also smash the former school record by more then 8 seconds.
Ginger got things started with a strong 2:22 leg to break the race open
and hand off to Laurel who shrugged off Friday's relay mishap to put the
race out of reach with her 2;19 leg, and then it was up to Jessamyn and
Kate to try and stay focused on a fast time despite having no competition
except for runners who they could lap. With Jess's 2:17 leg and Kate's
2:18 anchor leg, the team smashed the record. Carter Hamill ran a strong
race to grab 4th in the 3000. The women's 4x400 of Lyndsey Scott, Ariel
Haney, Monica Westin and Ali Stahl posted a solid time of 4:11 and had
seasonal bests from both Monica and Ali in the process.
The men's Distance Medley Relay got their meet off to a great start
on Friday as they just missed a provisional time for NCAA's as the quartet
of Mike Page (1200), Nathaniel Mahlberg (400), Andrews Schneider (800)
and John Stanton-Geddes (1600) got outstanding legs from all, including
PR times from their first 3 legs and wound up 3rd in their section and
5th overall to earn All-New ENgland honors. The 4x400 team of Joaquin Walker,
Tim Porter, Nathaniel and Janak Chandrasoma finally put things together
in the 4x400 and raced to a big season PR time of 3:23 as we had 3 guys
in the 50 second range to help grab 13th place and hit a mark for ECAC's.
The men's 4 x 800 of Fraser Kitchell, Dave Molina, Stanton-Geddes and Schneider
would finish the day with a 10th place showing as they knocked of 14 seconds
from their previous best time. Fraser dipped under 2:00 for the first time
on his leg, and then the team was aided by another PR 1:55 leg from Schneider
(his 2nd in less then 24 hours) and a PR 1:55 leg from Dave Molina.
DIII New England's - Feb 22nd (Student
Article)
The start of the championship portion of the season got under way, and
the teams went their separate ways. The women competed at Bowfin while
the men made a shorter trip to MIT. The women wound up finishing in a tie
for 8th place with 35 points and had several highlights in the day including
a new school record in the 4x400. Lindsay Scott led off with a 60.6 effort
that gave the team the led at the first exchange, Ariel Haney raced to
a 61 second leg and handed off to Kate Hamill who would run the same time,
and then Jessamyn Conell-Price brought the team home to a 3rd place finish
with a 60.5 second effort as the quartet eclipsed the old record by half
a second. Carter Hamill grabbed the highest placing for the team as eh
finished 2nd in the 5000 and earned an automatic standard for NCAA's in
the process, just missing her school record by less then a second. The
Distance Medley Relay got the meet started with a 4th place finish, as
the team of Ginger Polich, Ariel Haney, Kate Hamill and Aly Venti earned
All-NE honors with their performance that included incredible legs from
Ariel and Kate. Relays were a story of the day, as the 4x200 team of Ali
Stahl, Ginger, Ariel and Lindsay grabbed a 6th place finish despite being
in the slowest section. The 4x800 team of Helen Dole, Cart, Laurel Kilgour
and Ginger finished the day with a 4th place finish and their best time
of the year. Kate grabbed a 5th place finish in the 600, while in an earlier
section Monica Westin cruised to her fastest time of the year. Laurel and
Jessamyn cruised to their fastest times of the year, with Laurel grabbing
the last All-New England selection spot (8th) and Jess right behind her
in 9th. Lindsay grabbed 6th place in the triple jump with some acrobatic
jumping styles that wowed the crowd, and Julia Rucker finished her season
with a 17th place finish. Aly Venti won her section of the 1000 to finish
9th overall; Ali Dimon grabbed a 10th place finish in the 5000 as she was
well under the 19 minute mark, and Jenny Horowitz duplicated that 10th
place finish in the 3000.
The men grabbed 15th place with 11 points, with the 4 x 400 relay of
Joaquin Walker, Paul Whiting, Nathaniel Mahlberg and Janak Chandrasoma
easily winning the slowest section and grabbing a 5th place overall finish.
The team got a great lead off leg from Walker and never looked back. Ngai
Otieno grabbed a 6th place in the long jump, and ran to his fastest time
of the year in the 55m and qualifying for the finals, but a groin injury
prevented him from competing in the finals and earning his well deserved
All-New England honors. Mike Page finished 8th, and grabbed the final All-NE
spot, in the 3000, while Dave Schreiner and Matt Katz raced to a 10th and
13th place finish in the same event. The men's 4x800 nearly broke 8 minutes
as the team of John Stanton-Geddes, Jamal Aaron, Dave Molina and Andrew
Schneider raced to a 6th place finish with a big anchor leg by the Unit.
The Unit (Andrew Schneider) raced to an indoor PR in the open 800 earlier
in the day but just missed grabbing points by 1 spot, and John Stanton-Geddes
finished 12th in the 1500.
Stampede Classic - Feb 15th (Amherst
Student & Aly
Venti)
Both teams produced some great results in their last regular season invitational,
and now head into the championship portion of the season. The women started
the day with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the distance medley
relay as the quartet of Kaurel Kilgour, Lindsay Scott, Jessamyn Conell-Price
and Carter Hamill grabbed a runner-up spot in posting the fast time. As
it has in the past few weeks, the 4x800 relay finished off the day with
a convincing victory as Helen Dole, Aparna Nancherla, Alison Rodqiguez
and Aly Venti ran away from the competition. Carter Hamill posted the only
individual victory on the day as she led the 1000m from start to finish,
and was followed by Helen Dole (who posted a DIII qualifier while grabbing
5th) and Aparna Nancherla who ran her best time of the year. Kate Hamill
led the 800m from the start until the last few meters of the race, and
posted her best time and missed making the provisional cut for NCAA's by
.04 seconds. Jenny Horowitz lowered her PR by nearly 10 seconds in the
3000 to grab 4th and hit the standard for ECAC while in the first section
of the race, Margaret Davis returned from injury to run away from the field
to easily win; Lindsay Scott improved upon her Triple Jump best as she
grabbed second place just ahead of Julia Rucker. Jessamyn dropped down
to the 400 and grabbed 5th in the fastest time of the year for the team,
and in another section Ali Stahl led from the gun and had a grueling stretch
duel to seal the win; Ginger Polich and Laurel Kilgour posted fast times
in the 600 in their first crack at the event on the season.
The men got off to a great start as they grabbed a win in the first
running event of the day, as the distance medley relay team got close to
a provisional qualifier for NCAA's. The team of Andy Schneider, Janak Chandrasoma
and John Stanton-Geddes got a big boost by the return of Dave Molina who
has been hurt and stepped onto the track for the first time this year and
blazed to an indoor PR in the 800. Andy Schneider came back in the 1000
and had a huge last lap to not only grab the win, but also lowered his
PR from last year in the process. The men's 4 x 200 relay team, consisting
of James Seltzer, Paul Whiting, Janak Chandrasoma and Ngai Otieno, grabbed
a runner-up finish and lowered the school record by 5 seconds. Joaquin
Walker, missing last week's meet due to illness, returned in fine fashion
as he grabbed runner-up honors in the 200, grabbed 4th in the 55 and had
a great lead off leg in the 4x400 to join with Whiting, Schneider and Jamal
Aaron. Matt Katz broke 9 minutes for the first time in the 3000, as he
finished 2nd with a huge last 400 meter kick, and led Dave Schreiner and
Zeke Phillips to new PR's. Ngai Otieno grabbed 3rd in the 55m dash and
inched closer to the 22 foot mark in the long jump as he grabbed 3rd there
as well. In the first section of the 3000, Adam David broke the 10 minute
mark, and has reportedly scheduled a visit to the local barbershop! Julius
Nanna grabbed 3rd in the triple jump and broke the 41 foot barrier.
Cardinal Invite II - Feb 8th (Student
Article)
Both teams competed at a small, 6 team invitational at Wesleyan and once
again came away with many outstanding performances. Though the meet was
not scored, Amherst fared extremely well and would have been in contention
for a win. The men were led by Nagi Otieno who won the 55m dash, grabbed
runner-up honors in the long jump in his first crack at the event, and
then came back with a strong run in the 200m to grab 4th. Amherst also
got wins from John Stanton-geddes who grabbed a victory in the 3000 as
he led the race wire to wire; Mike Page took top honors in the 1500, and
the 4x800 relay of Page, Dave Schreiner, Fraser Kitchell and Andy Schneider
capped the day with a dominant win. Pat Hayes grabbed a runner-up finish
in the 55 Hurdles as he dipped below the 8 second barrier for the first
time this season; Matt Katz and Alex Lenkoski went 2-3 in the 5000m; Zeke
Phillips lowered his PR by nearly 10 seconds in the 3000 to grab 3rd while
Adam David nearly broke the 10 min barrier as he grabbed 7th; Julius Nanna
joined with Paul Whiting to go 3-4 in the triple jump and nearly bested
the 41 foot mark; Andy Schneider dipped under 2 minutes in the 800 as he
grabbed 3rd, Dave Schreiner earned runner-up honors in the 1500 while back
in 7th place Billy McNitt cracked the 5:00 barrier; the 4x400 team of Janak
Chandrasoma, Paul Whiting, Brian Hart and Nathaniel Mahlberg grabbed a
3rd place finish.
The women, like they have done in the last 2 meets, ran to a victory
in the 4x800 relay to finish the meet as the quartet of Aly Venti, Helen
Dole, Ginger Polich and Laurel Kilgour dominated their race. The 4x400,
in the event before, relay team got an outstanding lead off leg from Lindsay
Scott and then Ariel Haney, Jess Connell-Price and Kate Hamill had their
work cut out for them as they cruised to their fastest time of the season
by nearly 3 seconds. Lindsay had an outstanding day, even before her 60
second lead off leg, as she won the high jump with a PR tying mark that
broke a 12 year old school record and then went on to win the triple jump
in her first try at the event, nearly breaking 36 feet. Carter Hamill raced
to a solo effort win the 3000 with a solid time to earn the only other
victory for the team. Earning runner-up finishes for Amherst were Kate
Hamill in the 500m, Ariel Haney in the 400m, Laurel Kilgour in the 800
which would be a 2-3-4 Amherst finish as Jessamyn and Ginger would come
in on her heels, Helen Dole in the 1000, Caitlin Williams in the long jump
which would qualify her the DIII New England Championships. Julia Rucker
grabbed a third place mark in the triple jump and, as she has done with
every meet this year, bested her PR again.
Dartmouth Invitational - Feb 1st
(Student
Article)
The men and women traveled to Dartmouth to compete against the host school
and ten other schools in a non scoring invitational and ran away with some
outstanding performances. The end of intersession and the return to classes,
and on slaught of germs brought back by the rest of the campus did little
to hamper the efforts of the team. The women's 4x800 team of Any Venti,
Carter Hamill, Laurel Kilgour and Kate Hamill put an exclamation point
on the day as they ran to a convincing win, and posted the days lone victory.
The 4x400 relay quartet was entirely comprised of first year runners, and
the team of Lindsay Scott, Ariel Haney, Ginger Polich and Jessamyn Conell-Price
ran to a season's best time en route to their runner-up finish. Jessamyn
warmed up for the relay with the best individual finish of the day, as
she ran the 500 for the first time ever and grabbed a second place finish
with an outstanding time. In the women's 3000, Ali Dimon and Jenny Horowitz
raced together for the entirety of the the race and grabbed the 3rd and
4th place finish, as well as a huge PR and break through time for Jenny.
Another 3-4 finish was in the 1000, where Laurel and Ginger posted solid
times to grab those spots. Kate Hamill posted a 3rd place finish in the
800, running to her fastest time of the season. Julia Rucker, the last
to compete on the day as the triple jump was the final event to finish
up, proved that the wait was worth it as she not only jumped to a 5th place
finish, but bested her previous personal record by 2 feet to qualify for
the New England Championships. Carter Hamill and Aly Venti did triple duty
as both raced in the mile and the 800, before lining up for the 4x800 relay.
Ariel Haney and Ali Stahl raced solidly in the 400, with Ali just missing
the NE standard with her run.
The men were led by Captain Pat Hayes' convincing win the 60m Hurdles
- the first time competing at that distance as the normal run is 55m. Andrew
Schneider lit up the track in the last lap to move up to a 2nd place finish
in the 1000, before joining with Jamal Aaron, Fraser Kitchell and John
Stanton-Geddes to grab a runner-up finish in the 4x800 relay. The men's
3k was an exciting race as Mike Page easily went under the 9 minute mark
for the first time and grabbed 4th, while Dave Schreiner and Matt Katz
both lowered their PR's significantly and will look to crack the 9:00 barrier
in the next couple of weeks. Ngai Otieno, along with fellow football playing
first year Twins, James and Julian Seltzer, competed well in the 60m dash,
with Ngai grabbing a 5th place finish and then joined with Pat Hayes in
the 4x200 that finished 4th despite a fall near the exchange zone. Joaquin
Walker, nursing an aggravated hamstring, just missed making the finals
of the dash by 1 person. John Stanton-Geddes grabbed a 6th place finish
in the Mile, as he moved up well over the last 2 laps. In the next section
of the Mile, Adam David lowered his PR. Gee Roe, competing for the first
time this winter, threw the shot put to a new PR and looks to break 40
feet this weekend. Paul Whiting and Julius Nanna - returning from injury
- grabbed 5th and 6th in the triple jump, and then Paul had an outstanding
leg in the 4x400, where he joined with Nathaniel Mahlberg, Tim porter and
Janak Chandrasoma to grab a 4th place finish.
Terrier Classic and Wesleyan Invite - Jan 24 & 25th
(Student
Article)
On Friday night, Carter Hamill competed against some of the best women
in the country, as well as in the world, in the 5000 at the Terrier Classic
at Boston University. The winner of the race was the World Junior Cross
Country Champion from Ethiopia so it was a loaded field. Carter gained
valuable experience from the race, despite going out very fast for the
first mile, will certainly help her progression as she focuses on the early
part of March for her best performances. The rest of the team competed
on Saturday at the first of two invites at Wesleyan. The women had many
excellent performances, capped by the winning 4 x 800 relay quartet of
Laurel Kilgour, Helen Dole, Ginger Polich and Jessamyn Conell-Price who
lapped over half the field en route to a dominating win. Kate Hamill cruised
to an easy win in her debut at the 1000m; Jessamyn nearly broke the school
record in the 600 in her first attempt at the distance to record a convincing
win and Aly Venti was all alone after 2 steps to win the 3000 by nearly
an entire lap. Lindsay Scott nearly broke 16 in the long jump, won her
section of the 200 and then ran an outstanding leadoff leg of the 4 x 400
to help the team of Hamill, Monica Westin and Arial Haney grab runner-up
honors. Ariel warmed up for the relay with a 3rd place finish in the 400.
Ali Dimon just missed cracking 19 minutes in the 5k and grabbed 3rd place;
Laurel Kilgour grabbed a 3rd place in the 1500 just in front of PR setting
Jenny Horowitz, Ginger Polich lowered her PR in the 800 by a considerable
margin as she grabbed 4th.
The men were led by runner-up finishes from several athletes. Andrew
Schneider led the 800 for the large majority of the race would up 2nd,
Pat Hayes grabbed runner-up honor in the High Hurdles despite a set of
faulty blocks; Paul Whiting - in addition to running well in the sprints
- missed grabbing a win in the Triple Jump for the 2nd week in a row by
a mere 4 inches and Dave Schriener had a great race in the 3000 to finish
second in a large field. John Stanton-Geddes returned from Europe earlier
in the week and set his 5k PR to grab 3rd; Joaquin Walker grabbed a third
place in the 200 as well as a 4th place finish in the 55. The 3000 was
a great event for the guys as Flea, Zeke Phillips, James Johndrow and Evan
Guiney all had real strong races. Mike Page and Fraser Kitchell both
doubled in the 1500 and 1000 with solid results.
Tufts Invite I - Jan 18th
Both teams got their season's under way at the Tufts Invite with about
a dozen other schools. Enjoying a break from classes, the team has been
working extremely hard with double sessions each day and the meet showed
the results of their hard work. With one week left of the intersession,
the teams will continue with double session practices before heading back
to classes and a more "normal" schedule. The women grabbed third place
in the meet and were led by victorious efforts in the 600m and 800m by
captain Kate Hamill and first year Jessamyn Conell-Price, as both posted
fast opening marks. Alison Dimon and Jenny Horowitz grabbed 2nd and 4th
place in the 3000, Laurel Kilgour grabbed runner-up honors in the 800,
and Carter Hamill grabbed runner-up marks in the 1500 and a 4th place finish
in the 1000. First year Lindsay Clarke grabbed 3rd place in both the long
and high jumps, Ariel Haney finished 7th in the high jump, Ali Stahl returned
to the long jump with an 8th place finish and Julia Rucker PR's en route
to finishing 6th in the triple jump. Aly Venti returned form her semester
abroad to nearly run her PR in the 1500 and finish 4th, and then grabbed
points in the 1000 later in the day. The 4x400 relay of Haney, Kilgour,
Conell-Price and Kate Hamill had an exciting race as they nearly ran down
the Williams quartet at the line and grabbed 3rd.
Three sport athlete Paul Whiting led the men's 6th place finish with
his first track victory as he captured the triple jump, and showed that
he was the speed in the backfield as he out leaned fellow football player
Pat Hays in the 55m. Joaquin Walker, a soccer and lacrosse player and the
newest member of the team, grabbed runner-up honors in the 55m and then
grabbed points in the 200 and ran a solid leg on the 4x400 relay. Captain
Pat Hays grabbed runner-up honors in the 55m Hurdles as he raced to his
fastest season opener in an Amherst uniform. Andrew Schneider picked up
a pair of 4th place finishes in the 1500 and 1000. The 4x400 relay of Tim
Porter, Jamaal Aaron, Nathaniel Mahlberg and Janak Chandrasoma grabbed
5th place. Nathaniel grabbed a pair of 8th place finishes in the 200 and
400 before running a great 3rd leg of the relay. Fraser Kitchell and Mike
Page just missed scoring in the 1500 and 3000, as both raced well and grabbed
9th place finishes.
Husky Carnival - Dec 7th
Though only a small amount of the team participated in the first meet of
the year, as most were coming off of their respective fall seasons and
will wait until January to get under way with competition, we turned in
some very good early season performances. Competing at the Reggie Lewis
Track, site of this year's USATF National Championships, many of those
who had been training this fall got the opportunity to compete on a very
fast track and shake out some first time competing jitters. Several first
year women posted some very good marks individually and then as members
of various relays. Ariel Haney posted a very quick 400 time that qualified
her for DIII New England's as well as placed her in the Top 6 and she also
ran a surprise leg of the 4x800; Lindsay Scott posted some fast times in
the sprints as did Caitlin Williams, who also posted several very good
long jump marks. Kate Hamill ran a great 800 and nearly pulled off the
win to open her senior year in style, and then came back to join with Ariel,
Laurel Kilgour and Monica Westin to grab a Top 6 finish in the 4 x 800
relay. Carter Hamill, extending her XC fitness center long enough to race
the first meet, just missed qualifying automatically for NCAA's in the
5000 but her 4th place effort's time should be fast enough to get into
the meet. Laurel raced very well in the 1000 and grabbed 3rd place - the
day's highest finish for Amherst. Julia Rucker, despite not having jumped
into a pit yet this season, added nearly a foot to her Triple Jump PR.
Ali Stahl had a great start and then held on strongly over the last 100m
to win her section of the 400. Kristen Reid got her Amherst career started
off well with a good run in the 800, and Monica Westin had a very strong
finish in the 500m.
Nathaniel Mahlberg and Tim Porter both ran great season opening 500m
times, as both nearly broke 70 seconds despite not having touched the track
yet this year. They then joined with Paul Whiting and Janak Chandrasoma
in the 4 x 400 relay that resembled a roller derby more then a track race,
and despite the pushing, shoving, jumping over people and everything else
that could happen, finished the meet in style with a strong team showing.
Janak raced well in the 400 to win his heat, and then had a very strong
relay leg to close out the day. Paul and Julius Nanna both sprinted very
well in the 55m, and then came back to compete well in the Triple Jump.
