Meet Recap
Athletes of the Meet - Nate Freese'07 and Molly Priedeman'09
The teams tested their mettle against the rest of the Division III teams in New England at the 2 Day, DIII New England Championships held at Springfield College. On Friday night, in windy conditions, the 10k was an Amherst affair as Daniel Murner kept to pace and at four miles, overtook the leader and continued to push the pace en route to a 20 second victory. Shauneen Garrahan and Elise Tropiano traded laps every 3 circuits on the track to help keep the pace fast, and despite a huge field that was being lapped before the first mile, both hit automatic qualifiers for the NCAA Championships while destroying the former meet record. Laura Mortimer, battling the effects of strep throat ran great to finish 7th while Liz Dalton posted her best time of the year.
On Saturday, Nate Freese - despite being a senior, had never run at a Championship meet outdoors before last week, improved upon his 2nd place finish from last weekend by pulling away from the field in the 5k with 3 laps to go and not only winning the race, but also breaking 15 minutes. In the same race, Carlyle Eubank, who led for the first 4-5 laps of the race, had a strong race to finish 6th while Mike Harbus had a strong last mile to nearly grab the final scoring spot. Robert Boley just missed placing in the steeplechase but knocked 10 seconds off his best time of the year while rich Wilson used a big last 100m to dip under the ECAC qualifier to help extend his final season. The men's 4 x 400 relay of Steve Stewart, Kit Callahan, Basile Beaty and Jack Kiley ran to their best time of the year to finish 7th, aided by big legs from both Kit and Jack. Steve had a big PR in the 800, as he threw down a huge last 200 to win his section and break 1:58 for the first time, finishing just behind John Babbott who had a strong race in the championship section. Will Bell and John placed 15th and 14th in the 1500.
Maria Millard finished 3rd in the 400 Hurdles, with Kate Silverman running her best time of the year to finish 11th. After a long break happening seconds before the race was to start due to a timing malfunction, Caitlin Murphy finished 4th in the 800. She then anchored the 4 x 800 relay team of Molly Priedeman - who had a great lead off leg that was 4 seconds faster then any 800 that she has run before - Mary Doris Reggie and Zandra Walton to a 3rd place finish. Heather Wilson led Sophie Galleher and Nicole Anderson to a 4, 6 and 8th place finish in the 5000. Elise Tropiano, despite having run the night before, tested her speed on tired legs by placing 6th in the 1500 and a new PR. Katie Moravec won her section of the steeplechase handily in a 30 second improvement from earlier in the year, and would finish 8th overall. Hannah Campbell and Carly Levenson placed 10th and 13th respectively in the 400, and then joined with Maria and Kate to finish 5th in the 4x400.
