Meet Recap
Athletes of the Meet - Daniel Murner'10 and Elise Tropiano'09
The teams capped off a busy week of competition with a trip to Middlebury to compete at the annual conference championship. Even with having had the Little Three's last Saturday, a mid-week meet on Tuesday, and then 3 runners heading to the Penn Relays on Thursday the athletes put up some great marks against their NESCAC counterparts. The women finished 5th, and as they have been all year, were paced by victories by senior captains Shauneen Garrahan and Maria Millard. After having finished 2nd on Thursday night in the Collegiate Championships in the Steeplechase, she came back to win the 5000 - breaking the conference record and also winning a NESCAC race for the 4th year in a row. Maria, after having qualified for the NCAA meet on Tuesday in the 800, returned to her bread and butter - the 400 Hurdles - and completely ran away from the field while improving upon her school record. The 5k proved huge for the team, as in addition to Shauneen's victory, Heather Wilson - fresh off (if you could say that) of her NCAA Automatic time in the 10k on Thursday night and Katie Moravec provided a 1-2-3 sweep, with Katie throwing in a big last lap to move past several runners en route to her best outdoor time ever. In the same race, Nicole Green ran 40 seconds faster then her prior best. Elise Tropiano, after having had a PR race in the 5k at Penn Relays, took the lead from the gun in the steeplechase and did all the work with only a Colby runner sitting on her. Despite losing the lead in the last 300 meters, she ran to an NCAA Automatic mark and a big PR, while Sophie Galleher ran strong behind her to grab 5th , shaving nearly 20 seconds off of her time from the week before. Before running the 5k, Shauneen ran the 1500 and despite fatigue from Penn Relays and still having the 5k later in the day, took the lead from the gun and kept the pace honest before being passed in the last 50 meters and finished 2nd. Caitlin Murphy grabbed 5th in the race, while Meg Ray, running in the section before, ran to her best time of the spring. Nicole Anderson finished 3rd in the 10k, improving upon her time from earlier in the year, while Liz Dalton grabbed 10th. Zandra Walton finished 7th in a very strong 800 race, while in the early section, Molly Priedeman and Mary Doris Reggie each had strong races to finish 15th and 16th. Carly Levenson grabbed the last scoring spot in the 400 with a strong finishing kick that got her past 2 other runners, while Hannah Campbell just missed out on the scoring with her 10th place finish. The 4x400 team of Hannah, Carly, Mary Doris and Maria finished 4th and ran their best time of the outdoor season by nearly 8 seconds. in the day's last event, the 4x800 relay of Molly, Meg, Zandra and Caitlin finished 5th. The4x100 relay of Mattie baker, Hannah, Maria and Jenny Mancino won their section, and placed 6th overall.
The men were led by Daniel Murner's freshmen record in the 5k of 15:07 as he and John Babbott did all of the hard work in keeping the pace fast while the rest of the field was content to let them do the work - seemed to be a typical scene for the day. Daniel would finish 2nd, while John would finish 4th in a new PR, while Robert Boley would run his best time of the year to finish 12th. Nate Freese, competing in his first NESCAC Championship, took over the pacing just after 2 Miles and would do a lot of the work for the remainder of the race before 2 Wesleyan runners pulled away in the last 2 laps, but a strong kick, brought him back to a runner-up finish, while Harrison Lakehomer would grab the final scoring spot in 8th. basile Beaty won his section of the 800, and when the fast heat turned into a tactical race, his time of 1:57.52 would earn him a 4th place finish, with Jack Kiley finishing 7th. In the 1st section, Kit Callahan and Eric Glustrom both dipped under 2 minutes. Carlyle Eubank finished 7th in a stacked 1500 race, while Jimmy Swanson used a strong last 300 to move up to 13th overall. Richard Wilson ran to his best time of the season in the steeplechase, despite a fall into the water pit on the last lap while Will Bell would run to his best time and just missed breaking 10 minutes. 7 was the magic number when it came to the relays, as all three relays - the 4x100, 4x400 and Distance Medley - placed 7th. Steve Stewart led Tommy Moore and keith Pendergrass to a 12, 14, 15 finish in the 400.
