Athletes of the Meet - Basile Beaty'08 and Maria Millard'07
With Mother Nature continuing to have an affect on the season, a decision was made early in the week (due to potential snow fall) to travel down to the hill to compete at UMass Amherst, along with 7 other DI schools rather then head to Williams. While the wind did not subside, the decision proved to be the right call as the track and the competition led to a great day. The women were led by victories - and subsequent facility records and NCAA qualifying marks in the steeplechase, 400 Hurdles and 5000m. Shauneen Garrahan ran to a new school record in the steeplechase, attaining the 2nd fastest DIII time ever, despite it being her first crack at the event this spring. Maria Millard lowered her own record in the 400 Hurdles by over a second as she cruised to a convincing win, and qualified provisionally for NCAA's. Heather Wilson battled a UMass runner for the entire race before pulling away in the last stretch to open her season with an NCAA qualifying mark in the 5000. Elise Tropiano finished 3rd in the steeplechase, and also hit an NCAA provisional mark. Also in the 5000, Nicole Anderson, Laura Mortimer, Katie Moravec and Meg Ray all finished with in 11 seconds of each other as they ranged from 18:22 to 18:33. Jennifer Rybak launched the javelin over 90 feet to grab 4th overall, while Lauren benson finished 6th in the event. Shauneen and Zandra Walton placed 8th and 9th in the 800, both getting under the 2:20 mark. The 4 x 400 team of Carly Levenson, Kate Silverman, Zandra and Maria finished 3rd overall. In the 400, Carly was the top finisher for the team coming in 7th overall. Kate finished 9th in the 400 Hurdles, running under 70 seconds. Mattie Baker was the top finisher for the team in the 200, as she ran a strong race into a fierce headwind.
The men were led by Basile Beaty's 6th place finish in the 400, as he ran under 51 seconds to win his section. Jack Kiley battled a UNH runner down the final homestretch in his section of the 800, and raced to his best outdoor time of 1:58 while Rom Cabeza and Kit Callahan finished a few steps behind. Tommy Anderson, in the same race but a different section also had a great last stretch battle to finish in 2:01. Nathaniel Freese was the top finisher in the 5000 as he grabbed 8th, and ran to a new outdoor best of 15:12. Daniel Murner finished 2nd in the unseeded section of the same race, lowering his best time be over 20 seconds. The 4 x 400 relay of Steve Stewart, Kit, Jack and Basile finished 5th overall and ran to their fast time of the year. Steve Shashy nearly cracked 130 feet in the javelin as he placed 10th in that event. Peter Foote matched the 10th place finish, but in the steeplechase as he dipped under 10 minutes while Robert Boley ran 10:01, and Rich Wilson was a place behind running 10:11. Steve Stewart finished 13th in the 400, while Keith Pendergrass returned to the track with a solid race in that same event. Geoff Stricsek turned in the teams best placing in the 200 , while John Babbott finished 17th in the 1500, as Carlyle Eubank, Will Bell and Jimmy Swanson all finished within a couple of seconds of each other.
