Weekend Recap
Performers of the Meet - Daniel Murner'10 and Hallie Schwab'11
Harvard played host to the ECAC Division III Championships March 7-8 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the team took advantage of another opportunity to run against fast competition. Peter Harrison (2nd in the mile in 4:13.81) and Jimmy Swanson (7th in the 800 in 1:55.06) essentially matched their breakthrough performances of a week ago, despite running on a slower track this week. Though Harrison narrowly missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships, he had the second-fastest time by a freshman in all of Division III this season. Swanson, a sophomore, lowered his open 800 best by .03 of a second this week, and a total of nearly three seconds this season. Also turning in a breakthrough performance was sophomore Daniel Murner, who finished second in the 3000 in 8:38.25, a 16-second improvement over his best time last year. Junior Peter Foote ran a gutsy race as well, making a big move mid-race and finishing ninth in 8:50.23, just off the PR he set a week ago. Mike Harbus had a bit of an off day, but finished 15th in 8:55.32, and John McGrail put in a good effort despite being sick, struggling home in 27th place. The 4x880 yard relay team of Tom Anderson, Jimmy Swanson, Peter Harrison and Ben Read placed 17th in 8:10.90 with Read running his best split (2:05.4) of the season.
On the women’s side, the distance medley relay squad of Zandra Walton (3:46.1 1320y), Susie Wasserman (60.4 440y), Carly Levenson (2:20.5 880y), and Heather Wilson (5:04.5 mile) finished second in 12:11.86. Though they earned a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Championships, they came up just short of getting into the meet. In the open mile, Elise Tropiano ran a PR of 5:08.70 in a tactical race. In the 5000, Nicole Anderson ran a well-paced race to finish eighth in a season-best 17:55.23. Hallie Schwab ran her best race of the season and finished 13th in a PR of 18:15.41. Kim Partee struggled a bit after running a fast early pace, but she held on to finish ninth in 17:58.98. Liz Dalton fought hard despite having an off day and finished 20th in 18:57.17. Cate Knuff was unable to finish the race after suffering an asthma attack. Susie Wasserman ran a great 500 to win her heat and finish fifth overall in 1:19.56. She was followed by Carly Levenson (1:19.86 for ninth) and Mary Doris Reggie (1:20.29 for 14th). The 4x800y relay team of Hoiwan Cheung (2:25.2), Zoe Pagonis (2:28.9), Zandra Walton (2:22.0) and Mariana Palacios (2:30.1) scored some points with their fourth-place finish. The 4x220y relay squad of Kate Silverman, Jennifer Rybak, Emily Dick, and Kat Loomis finished 23rd in 1:52.41. The three girls in the 500, joined with Kate Silverman to run the Mile Relay and finished 12th.
