Coach Mills came to Amherst in 1993 and served as a defensive coordinator through the 1996 season before taking over at Head Coach. The Lord Jeffs finished at 7-1 three times during Mills' first 12 seasons, but Amherst broke through in 2009 by posting its first 8-0 record since 1984. The postseason awards poured in for Mills, whose honors included an American Football Coaches Association Division III Region 1 Coach of the Year selection. The Lord Jeffs achieved perfection again in 2011, notably leading the league in scoring offense, turnover margin and sacks en route to 13 All-Conference selections and another NESCAC Coach of the Year honor for Mills. Mills capped off the 2012 season by leading the Jeffs to a come-from-behind victory over the Ephs at the last game at Pratt Field before it undergoes major renovations.

We are pleased to invite you and a handful of fellow young alumni to join us for this wonderful opportunity to share your thoughts and questions with the 19th President of Amherst College. Among the many issues that are prominent on campus are college cost, faculty retiring and hiring transitions, making the most of diversity on campus, sexual respect and Title IX, student life and building projects. Please come share your thoughts on these and any other Amherst related topics that come to mind. President Martin is particularly eager to hear the young alumni perspective and we hope that you will be able to join the discussion.

Kirk Johnson'82 has recently been named Director of the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. He is a paleontologist who spent most of his career (1991-2012) at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science where he led expeditions that resulted in the discovery of more than 1,400 fossil sites on all continents. He is known for his scientific books and articles, popular books, museum exhibits, collaborations with artists, and his accessible public speaking style. In 2010-11, he led the Snowmastodon Project, the excavation of an amazing ice age site discovered by construction workers in Snowmass Village on October 14, 2010. This dig was featured in the Nova documentary, Ice Age Death Trap, and in the book, Digging Snowmastodon, Discovering an Ice Age World in the Colorado Rockies.
