Sarah Mattison Buhl

Science Center Programs Coordinator

I love connecting students with opportunities. I believe in nurturing growth, creating possibilities and inspiring discoveries.  My time at Amherst is often spent as a thought partner for individual students and STEM-focused student groups who are looking for ways to create programming, assessments, exhibits, publications, and extracurricular opportunities for engagement.  I help students grow ideas into realities by mapping out plans, coordinating with cross-campus partners, and facilitating connections with the Five College Consortium. As a first-gen college graduate, I am keenly aware of the unique challenges some students face during their first weeks on campus. Each fall, I look for ways to welcome new and diverse STEM-interested students to the community.

Jason Williams

Director of Chemical and Laboratory Safety

I oversee chemical and laboratory safety for the College. Specifically, I oversee the use, handling, management, and disposal of chemicals, lasers, and radioactive materials.

Some areas where Amherst personnel might consult with me include the use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), the development Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for chemicals and procedures, the shipping of hazardous chemicals, and providing training for laboratory personnel.

My mandate is to protect chemical users, the wider natural environment, and the integrity of the college by keeping abreast of government regulations and employing best practices

While my office is in the Science Center, I do consult with all users of chemicals campus-wide.
