Cullen Murphy

Cullen Murphy ’74 has served on Amherst College's Board of Trustees since 2000, as an elected Alumni Trustee for six years prior to being appointed a term trustee in 2006. He was elected Chair of the Board in 2012. He is a freelance writer and editor-at-large of Vanity Fair magazine.

Murphy holds a B.A. in European studies from Amherst. Before arriving at Vanity Fair, in 2006, he was an associate editor of Change magazine (1975 to 1977), senior editor of The Wilson Quarterly (1977 to 1985) and then managing editor of The Atlantic Monthly (1985 to 2005). His books include Rubbish! The Archaeology of Garbage, with co-author William L. Rathje (2001); The Word According to Eve: Women and the Bible in Ancient Times and Our Own (1998); Are We Rome? The Fall of an Empire and the Fate of America;(2008) and, most recently, God's Jury: The Inquisition and the Making of the Modern World (2013).
