STEPHEN INGRAM FINNEY ’45

Stephen Ingram Finney, 85, was born on Oct. 31, 1924, to Lois Catherine Ingram Finney and Harry Anson Finney in Evanston, Ill., and passed away on April 25, 2010. Steve loved music and continued to play the flute in several local orchestras and his woodwind quintet. His other loves were his wife, Dee; his five daughters; nine grandchildren; golf; and word puzzles.

Steve entered Amherst in the Fall of 1941 and was a member of the Phi Delta Sigma fraternity. His education was interrupted by WWII when he joined the U.S. Army, where he served in Britain as a cryptographer. After the war, he earned a master’s degree from the University of Chicago and spent his career as an auditor, becoming a partner with the Deloitte CPA firm. He served on the board of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants and later became its chairman.

After retiring in 1990, he and his wife, Dee, traveled extensively, played golf and particularly enjoyed watching LPGA on television, as daughter Allison is a professional golfer.

Steve is survived by his wife, Dee, and daughters Carolyn Glenn, Eleanor Vita, Barbara Jeffrey, Deborah McKenzie and Allison Finney, along with nine grandchildren.
