In Memory

Doug Miller, age 78, loving husband for forty-six years of Margaret P. (Preiss) Miller of Byfield, died January 5, 2007, at the Academy Manor Nursing Home in Andover, MA.

Born in Swampscott, the son of the late Raymond P. and Marion (Chesley) Miller, he attended Swampscott schools and graduated from Governor Dummer Academy (now known as The Governor’s Academy), Byfield, in the Class of 1946.  A graduate of Amherst College in the Class of 1950, he then proudly served in the United States Air Force for four years.

Following his discharge, Mr. Miller began his teaching career at Governor Dummer Academy as a math teacher.  After furthering his own education in science at MIT, he began teaching physics and was the first chairman of the science department for the school.  Mr. Miller oversaw the renovation of Lang Gymnasium into the Schumann Science Center and also was a public speaking instructor.  For over thirty years, he was also the school’s yearbook advisor.

Doug spoke warmly of his fraternity days at Amherst.  He was proud of his role in helping to reestablish the hockey program at the College and for managing the baseball team under Paul Eckley.  Doug’s love for the College was also in evidence when he literally leaped down the admission’s hallway on the day his daughter was told she would be a member of the Class of ’83.

At the heart of Mr. Miller’s life was his family.  During his tenure, Mr. Miller was pleased to have his four children graduate from Governor Dummer Academy.  He retired in 1991, the same year his youngest child, Scott, graduated.

He served for several years as a member of the Republican town committee and was an accomplished photographer, enjoying subjects in nature as well as those of architectural and historical interest.  An avid bridge player at the Newbury Council on Aging, he also enjoyed playing board games.  In the summer, he spent many of his days tending to his flower and vegetable gardens.  His great sense of humor will be missed by all those who knew him.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Miller is survived by four children, Linda Miller and her partner, Shona Curtis, of New Milford, CT; Mark and his wife, Diane, of Tyngsboro; David and his wife, Christina, of Manchester, NH; and Scott and his fiancée, Alexandra Webb, of Newton, NH; a brother, John, and his wife, Alison, of Wolfeboro, NH, and Ft. Lauderdale, FL; a sister, Lois Becker, of Los Angeles; two grandchildren, Shelby and Jeffrey Miller, of Tyngsboro; and several nieces and nephews.
