Rodman R. Black '50 died November 24, 2008.
We must also report the death of Rod Black on November 24, 2008, in his and Nancy's home state of New Hampshire, where they moved many years ago from their native Rhode Island. Before coming to Amherst, Rod was graduated from the Providence Country Day School. At Amherst, Rod was a member of Chi Psi. Rod and Nancy had two sons—Rodman Jr., and David, and a daughter Betsy. He worked for and then ran the Pawtucket [RI] Times newspaper, and started and ran, with Nancy, his own vending machine business after moving to New Hampshire. After retirement, he turned it over to his son David. In our 50th reunion book, Rod wrote of two unplanned events in his life that truly shaped it: the chance meeting with Nancy at Mount Holyoke, and his mid-life career change from newspapering in Rhode Island to vending machines in New Hampshire. He characterized both of these events as "...turned out splendidly." The Blacks were married for 58 years, and enjoyed "...things that keep us from rusting out are: downhill and cross country skiing, tennis, gardening, forestry, maple sugaring, stone wall building, woodworking..." They also have enjoyed overseas traveling.
