Homecoming this year will occur the weekend of October 17-19. The football game on Saturday afternoon will be against Wesleyan. Look for familiar faces in the grandstand so that our classmates may sit together. As in past years, we will share a tent on Pratt Field with the Classes of 1949 through 1953. A sign on the tent will identify it as ours. Following the game, we will have our traditional dinner for classmates and guests at The Lord Jeff. Good old reliable Jeff Hartzell again will serve as host. (As of now, it is doubtful I will make it, but I'll get there if I can.) Additionally, the College will offer many interesting programs and events, including a dialogue with our new president, Tony Marx, on Saturday morning. If you plan to attend, please call Jeff at (610) 664-0379 or Bill Vickery of the Alumni Office at (413) 542-2382.
The Tom Wyman Memorial Fund drive has been singularly successful. The latest report shows contributions from classmates of $30,900, and, of course, it would be great if it were to become significantly larger. If you plan to give, send your check, payable to’ Trustees of Amherst College" with the notation 'THW 1951 Memorial Endowment Fund, to the Alumni Office, Amherst College, PO Box 5000, Amherst, MA 01002. Please send it at your earliest opportunity, as we'd like to wrap up the campaign by the end of September. Contributions have ranged from $100 to $2,500, with quite a few between $500 and $1,000, but whatever amount you feel comfortable in giving will be received gratefully.
Dr. Fred Blanton died suddenly on June 2, 2003 at this home in Deerfield Beach, Fl. Fred was an ophthalmologist who did important research in eye surgery and treatment of glaucoma. He ran in the Boston Marathon on ten occasions. His other interests included spear fishing, flying own plane and relaxing with his family at their cottage on the Rhode Island shore. At Amherst, his was a member of Phi Delta Theta and, being an excellent student, he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. It is sad that we have lost this fine and gifted classmate.
Many thanks and warm regards,
