Walter De Melman died Oct. 5, 2008, in Washington, D.C., of complications from pneumonia. A native of Washington, Walter graduated from Georgetown Prep. and then the Merchant Marine Academy in 1948 before coming to Amherst in our sophomore year, but as a member of the Class of 1952. However, with summer school credits, he was able to join our Class and graduate with us in 1951.
After Amherst, Walter was employed by the federal government for some 51 years, primarily in the Maritime Administration in Washington. Walter never married. His surviving sister, Ann McHugh, and her large family lived nearby, giving Walter plenty of time with nieces and nephews. The Class extends its condolences to Walter’s sister and her extended family.
