A Beginner’s Guide to Orientation
Photos by Frank Ward. Text by Charlene Dy '03.
First-Year Orientation is the initial Amherst experience for most students, helping them to learn about the nuances of college life and providing an opportunity to bond before the start of classes. To give readers a sense of the wide range of activities available during Orientation, we followed three Stearns Dormitory roommates (right) for the week. The three students are (from left) Mikela Yarawamai, who came from Kamuela, Hawaii, and joined her sister, Ana ’04; Honora Talbott, a native of MacLean, Va., who went to a girls’ high school with a strong drama program and who hopes to perform at Amherst; and Margaret Ramsey, from Belmont, Mass., who spent a post-graduate year at Phillips Academy and plans to swim for the college. The photo essay that follows is the record of their experience.
