Michael Kiefer Moves On
Michael Kiefer, the college’s chief advancement officer, announced in February that he would step down on June 30 to pursue an interest in international affairs. At the request of President Anthony W. Marx, Kiefer will stay on as a special adviser to the president for an indefinite period of time, in order to ensure a smooth transition.
“I am very grateful to Michael and his colleagues for all they have done and will do to help build understanding, appreciation and support of our emerging priorities,” Marx wrote in a letter announcing Kiefer’s resignation.
Kiefer arrived at Amherst in 1995 from McGill University in Montreal, where, as vice principal for development and alumni relations, he saw private annual support for the university increase from $26 million to $42 million. At Amherst, he directed the 1996-2001 comprehensive campaign that raised $270 million for the college against a $200-million goal. He built strong connections with alumni across generations, and under his tenure, annual philanthropic support of the college doubled. Kiefer, a Pittsburgh native, began his career at the fund-raising consulting firm Ketchum, Inc., where he worked closely with client boards in health care, the arts and education.
Accordingly, the college has launched a search for Kiefer’s replacement, and is actively seeking nominations and expressions of interest for the position. The chief advancement officer reports directly to the president and provides leadership to the offices of development and alumni and parent programs. The successful candidate will possess the experience and personal qualities necessary to plan and implement a comprehensive advancement program for the college. Please e-mail nominations and expressions of interest, in confidence, to Suzanne Isack at firstname.lastname@example.org.
