"The Making of 'The Eighteen-Day Running Mate: McGovern, Eagleton and a Campaign Crisis'"
"From Thesis to Published Book"
October 27, 2012 - 11:30 am to 12:30 pm (already occurred)
Joshua M. Glasser ’10 will discuss his recently published book "The Eighteen-Day Running Mate: McGovern, Eagleton, and a Campaign in Crisis" (Yale University Press), which takes readers back to an election-year fiasco unlike any other in American history: Sen. George McGovern’s decision to select-- and then ultimately drop --Sen. Thomas Eagleton ’50 as his running mate on the 1972 Democratic presidential ticket. Glasser explores the McGovern campaign’s decision-making process as it confronted news that its running mate had been treated with electroshock therapy for depression, drawing lessons for the present day. Glasser’s book began as his senior thesis at Amherst, and he will also discuss the thesis-writing process and journey from graduation to publication. Glasser will be available to sign books, provided by Amherst Books, after his talk.
