The Science Behind Happiness

Catherine Sanderson on “The Science Behind Happiness”

Friday, April 12, 2013

Professor of Psychology Catherine Sanderson presents both surprising and not-so-surprising information on the science behind happiness. What role do money, IQ, marriage, friends, children, weather, and religion play in making us feel happier? Is happiness stable over time? How can happiness be increased?

Professor Sanderson describes cutting-edge research from the field of positive psychology on the factors that do (and do not) predict happiness, and provide participants with practical (and relatively easy!) ways to increase their own psychological well-being.

About the Community Hour

Regularly scheduled Community Hours bring together students, faculty and staff to share common experiences and highlight community talents. The campus-wide gatherings are meant to encourage a sense of connection and to foster appreciation and respect among all members of the Amherst community.

Suggestions being considered for future events include motivational speakers, town-hall-style discussions, poetry readings, musical performances, dramatic or comedy performances, lectures on nontraditional subjects and friendly competitions.

Community Hour is sponsored by the Office of the President and planned by the Office of Conferences and Special Events.

We welcome more ideas for Community Hour activities. Please submit ideas via email to Patricia Allen at pmallen@amherst.edu or by using the online Suggestion Box.
