AMHERST, Mass.— Beginning Tuesday, Feb. 15,  the Mead Art Museum at Amherst College will host a series of five informal discussions inspired by photographs from the Mead’s collection. Organized by Alex Strecker, Class of 2013, of Amherst College’s Marsh Arts House, the discussions will be facilitated by enthusiastic students with a passion for photography. Each session will highlight a pairing of photographs from the collection, exploring questions of subject matter and the unique influence of the photographic medium on artistic choices. Accompanying the series will be a weekly blog chronicling series event; the blog will highlight additional photographs from the collection and offer a forum for participants to share their own work inspired by Mead photographs.

“This series offers a welcome opportunity for visitors to renew their engagement with the Mead’s sizeable collection of more than 1,500 photographs,” said Elizabeth Barker, museum director and chief curator. “I expect that participants will be fascinated to see these undeservedly little-know jewels of Amherst’s art collection.”

Free and open to the public, the discussions will take place at 8 p.m. on five Tuesday nights: Feb. 15, March 1 and 22, and April 5 and 26. The student facilitators will be, in chronological order, Alice Wang ’13, Thea Goldring’14, Perry de la Vega,’13 and Strecker; Strecker will facilitate the final two events.

A complete schedule of the museum’s spring events is posted on the Mead’s Web site: www.amherst.edu/museums/mead/schedule. The Mead Art Museum houses the art collection of Amherst College, totaling more than 16,000 works. An accredited member of the American Association of Museums, the Mead participates in Museums10, a regional cultural collaboration. During the academic term, the museum is open Tuesday through Thursday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to midnight and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
