AMHERST, Mass. - Danielle Clough has joined the Amherst College Community Outreach Program as an "AmeriCorps*VISTA," or "volunteer on service to America."

"Most AmeriCorps members are in direct service," Clough says, working with the poor, the sick and others who need assistance. "But places like Amherst College, where the community outreach program is already strong, also need help," she says. The scope of service opportunities at Amherst College is almost overwhelming: students can participate in a score of community service projects and organizations all across the Pioneer Valley. Clough will work with Jennifer Cannon, the director of Outreach, to help students find the right project for them. She also hopes to increase opportunities for student leadership in service.

Danielle Clough (pronounced "clow"), who earned a B.A. degree in 1996 at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y., has worked as a residence hall director and soccer coach. She is also an active participant and member of the board of directors of SpeakOut, a Boston-based non-profit group that brings gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered speakers to Boston-area schools, clubs and businesses.

Clough's one-year appointment at Amherst fully funded by the Massachusetts Campus Compact AmeriCorps*VISTA program, which places more than 20 volunteers on college campuses throughout the state to serves as mentors and trainers.

The Amherst College Community Outreach Program serves students, faculty and staff who want to do community work. The program directs students to community opportunities that will sustain their personal growth and develop their understanding of the community around them. Outreach also provides dialogue and reflection in workshops, lectures and discussion groups.
