AMHERST, Mass.—The Amherst Symphony Orchestra presents its season’s Fantastic Finale on Saturday, April 18 at 8 p.m. in Buckley Recital Hall in the Arms Music Center at Amherst College.

The program will open with Camille Saint-Saens’s flashy Introduction & Rondo Capriccioso, featuring Olivia Katrandjian ’09 on solo violin. The orchestra will then perform Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique. In five movements, this virtual tone poem depicts Berlioz’s obsessive and hallucinatory infatuation with Irish actress Harriet Smithson, with whom he corresponded for years before finally meeting her at the symphony’s premiere. Composed just three years after the death of Beethoven, Symphonie Fantastique is a radical departure in genre, color, style and orchestration from previous symphonic tradition. Mark Lane Swanson, music director, and Daniel Curtis ’08 will conduct.

This concert is open to the public. Tickets are free to Amherst College students with ID, and cost $8 for the general public and $4 for Five College students with ID, seniors and children under 13. Tickets may be reserved by e-mailing, or by calling the Concert Office at 413-542-2195.
