AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College Department of Music announces the launch of the new Parallels Series, which will feature top-of-the-line performers in jazz, new music and world music.
Created under the leadership of Eric Sawyer, associate professor and chair of the college’s music department, Parallels honors the increasing breadth of interest and expertise in music on campus and throughout the Pioneer Valley community. “The launch of the Parallels gives us the means to embrace new musical ideas and to watch and listen as genres new and old collide, intersect, form and transform to make beautiful and engaging music,” says Sawyer.
The inaugural season of Parallels will feature three concerts:
- On Oct. 2 at 8 p.m., iconic Czech violinist and vocalist Iva Bittová will perform with bassist George Mraz.
- On March 27 at 8 p.m., So Percussion will perform new works by Pulitzer Prize winner Steve Reich, Dan Trueman and Steve Mackey.
- On April 18 at 8 p.m., The Dave Holland Quintet will close the 2009-10 Parallels season.
