2009-10 Music at Amherst Chamber Series Launches Sept. 18 to 20 with Bartók Celebration Featuring the Borromeo String Quartet

AMHERST, Mass. – The Music at Amherst Chamber Series will open its 2009-10 season with a weekend-long celebration of the string quartets of Béla Bartók from Friday, Sept. 18, to Sunday, Sept. 20. The details for the weekend are as follows:
- Sept. 18, 7 p.m.—Amherst College Associate Professor of Music David Schneider will give a lecture titled “Bartók and the Art of the String Quartet.” The talk is open to the public and will be held in Arms Music Center Room 3 at Amherst College.
- Sept. 19, 8 p.m.—The acclaimed Borromeo String Quartet will perform Bartók’s string quartets 1, 3 and 5 at Arms Center’s Buckley Recital Hall. Immediately before, Schneider will deliver a 30-minute pre-concert lecture at 7 p.m. in the same venue that is open to ticket holders.
- Sept. 20, 3 p.m.—The Borromeo Quartet will perform Bartók’s quartets 2, 4 and 6. Quartet first violinist Nicholas Kitchen will give a 30-minute pre-concert lecture at 2 p.m., open to ticket holders. Both events will also take place at Buckley.
The Music at Amherst Chamber Series will feature three other performances during the 2009-10 season. Individual tickets to all concerts go on sale two weeks prior to each event date.
