NPR Host and Pianist Christopher O’Riley to Play Radiohead, R.E.M. at Amherst College Oct. 22

AMHERST, Mass. – The 2010-2011 Music at Amherst Parallels Series kicks off with a concert by National Public Radio host and pianist Christopher O’Riley on Friday, Oct. 22, at 8 p.m. in Buckley Recital Hall in the Arms Music Center at Amherst College. O’Riley will perform songs from his Out of My Hands album, which features piano adaptations of alternative rock. The concert requires tickets; seats may be reserved by calling 413/542-2195 or emailing concerts@amherst.edu.

O’Riley is recipient of a prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant for his classical piano work and an equally coveted four-star review from Rolling Stone magazine for his piano adaptations of rock. The Los Angeles Times describes O’Riley’s playing as having “infectious passion,” as he delves into the rich world of alternative rock. O’Riley’s program will be announced from the stage and drawn from his latest album, Out of My Hands, which includes music from R.E.M., Porthishead, Cocteau Twins, Pink Floyd, Nirvana, The Bad Plus, The Smiths, Tears for Fears, Radiohead and Elliot Smith.

The box office for this performance opens on Oct. 11. Ticket prices are $18 for the general public, $12 for senior citizens, $10 for students and $7 for Amherst College students. Amherst College students can also request free student rush tickets at the door beginning at 7 p.m. on the evening of the performance.
