Katharine Fretwell ’81 Named Dean of Admission and Financial Aid at Amherst College; Longtime Dean Tom Parker to Retire

AMHERST, Mass.—Katharine “Katie” Fretwell , a 1981 graduate of Amherst College who has served her alma mater’s Admission Office in various capacities for nearly 25 years, has been appointed dean of admission and financial aid at the college, effective July 1, 2014. Fretwell, currently the dean of admission, succeeds Amherst’s longtime Dean of Admission and Financial Aid Tom Parker, who will retire at the end of June. Parker’s retirement ends an illustrious 15-year career at the college.

The Henry Luce Foundation, an organization committed to broadening knowledge and encouraging the highest standards of service and leadership, has awarded Amherst College a $223,200 Clare Boothe Luce (CBL) Program grant to support summer science research opportunities for Amherst women. Tanya Leise, associate professor of mathematics, will serve as project director for the three-year grant, which will provide undergraduate research awards to a total of 24 students to undertake immersive research projects and travel to professional conferences to present their research.
