Commencement Weekend Information

Commencement Morning

Graduating seniors gather for Commencement with their caps and gowns in the Alumni Gymnasium at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday. Breakfast will be available in the gym starting at 8 a.m. Commencement staff and the student marshals will be lining up the procession as planned during the Commencement rehearsal. Students process up Memorial Hill and around the Main Quadrangle at 10 a.m. and are seated accordingly. 


At Commencement, students are given individual diplomas. The diplomas measure 10" by 13" and are handed to students inside an inscribed tube.

The diplomas are issued in Latin. The English transcription follows:

The Trustees of Amherst College give greetings in The Lord to all readers of this letter. Let it be known that it is our decision to give (name), in accordance with his deserts, the title and rank of Bachelor of Arts (appropriate level) and we have granted him all the honors, dignities, insignia, rights and privileges pertaining to the rank in these United States.

Medical Services During Commencement Weekend

The Student Health Service will be open Commencement Weekend. The hours are Friday, 8:30 a.m to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The office telephone number is 413/542-2266. 

Students continue to be covered for urgent medical needs (during the hours when the Student Health Office is not open) at the University of Massachusetts Health Center, telephone 413/577-5000.

Students, visitors and families may be served at the University Health Services during these "off hours" on a fee-for-service basis.
