Strategic Planning Phase One
The mission of Amherst College is to “educate men and women of exceptional potential from all backgrounds so that they may seek, value, and advance knowledge, engage the world around them, and lead principled lives of consequence.” Our dedication to preserving and advancing this core purpose is steadfast, even as we recognize that the context in which we are fulfilling our mission is changing rapidly. As we approach our bicentennial and celebrate our past, the moment is right to plan for our future. Over the next 12 months, we will engage all members of our community as we reflect on how to prepare Amherst College for the turbulent and fascinating years ahead. The Strategic Planning process will be directed by Provost Peter Uvin.
The four core committees focus on major areas of substantive concern for the future of the college in a time of financial, political, economic, and technological turbulence. They are deliberately designed to cut across traditional silos (faculty; staff; students; residential life; etc.). They are also aspirational: we believe that doing these things better will be crucial for the future of the College.
Whatever choices we make in the four core areas, support is required to achieve success. The three support committees are devoted to exploring our options and needs.
The Steering Committee is composed of the chairs of the four core and three support committees and members of the senior administration. It will oversee the strategic planning process and ensure coordination between the committees. After the committees have prepared their reports, the steering committee will prepare the final report.
