In pictures: A day in the life of a 'strong, smart, and bold' partnership
October 2013—Ten years ago this fall, Priyanka Jacob '07 drove to Holyoke with the Amherst Feminist Alliance to tutor for a non-profit dedicated to girls' empowerment. She returned weekly to the non-profit for the duration of her four years at Amherst.
The organization was Girls Incorporated of Holyoke, and it marked the beginning of what would become a full-fledged partnership between Amherst College and Girls Inc. For ten years, students like Jacob have returned, from week to week and year to year, to help fulfill the organization's mission of "inspiring girls to be strong, smart and bold."
Today, students in the Community Engagement Leader program manage the fifty or more volunteers that go each week to Girls Inc. To commemorate the ten-year partnership anniversary, photographer Sandra Costello spent a day documenting the tutors and girls at Girls Inc.
For Jacob, volunteering with Girls Inc. was part of "one big education" that she got at Amherst. "Girls Inc. is very much tied up in my memory of college." With the high number of students returning each year to Girls Inc., Jacob is not alone.
