Women’s Soccer and Women’s Lacrosse teams raise money for birthday wishes

May 2014—story by Caroline Broder '15

The Amherst College Women’s Soccer and Women’s Lacrosse teams recently partnered up to raise awareness and funds for Birthday Wishes, a local organization in South Hadley whose mission is to provide birthday parties for homeless children in the community. The organization believes that all children, regardless of their living situation, should celebrate their birthdays joyfully, surrounded by family, friends, and others who care.

At the women’s lacrosse game on Saturday, March 29, women’s soccer players walked around with donation boxes to collect from parents, friends, and fans. After successful collection efforts, the teams purchased the most-needed supplies for goodie bags and birthday parties. The two teams then assembled goodie bags, some of which were made for toddlers and others for older aged children. The teams delivered the goodie bags, along with a considerable amount of donations and other necessary items for the organization, this April. The efforts of this project were led by Meghan McDonough ‘16, the women’s lacrosse Athletics Teams Engagement Leader (ATEL), Emily Hester ‘17, the women’s soccer ATEL, and Caroline Broder ‘15, an Athletics Liaison and member of the women’s soccer team. Through these combined efforts, the teams will be donating over $800 worth of goodie bags, supplies, and donations and hope to continue this partnership into the future.
