What is Civic Engagement Scholars?

Civic Engagement Scholars program (CES) is a funded summer internship program. Students find their own public service internship opportunity and then apply to become a Civic Engagement Scholar. Civic Engagement Scholars have turned their summer internship experiences into honor theses, special topics courses, and careers. Students in the CES program have found the opportunity to connect their academic lives with the hands-on experiences of internships to be fundamentally transformative.

What do students receive?

Accepted students receive:

  • Support throughout the entire internship process:  pre-departure to end of summer evaluation
  • A set stipend amount through the generous support of the Argosy Foundation, John Abele ’59, and many other generous alumni.
    • Students completing internships in the United States will receive $3,500.
    • Students who live at home in the United States will receive a $2,500 stipend.
    • Students traveling abroad will receive a $4,000 stipend.
  • Structured reflection about their experience
What are the program requirements?

Civic Engagement Scholars are required to:

  • Complete an eight to ten week internship with a minimum of 300 work hours.
  • Participate in pre-departure and re-entry work and some summer reflection. This work asks to students to critically engage with the internship experience and to reflect upon their own experiences, learning and assumptions. Many students find profound connections between theory (academic experiences at Amherst College) and their applied learning experience (community learning in the field).
  • Participate in the Internship Fair or a similar event during the year following their internship.
