Book & Plow Farm is a newly established vegetable farm that serves the Amherst College community. It is located on Amherst College land -the farm center being located at Tuttle Hill - and is within easy walking distance of the school. This first year the farm plans on having up to five acres in vegetable production.
As a B&P intern you will have the unique opportunity to be part of building up this new enterprise with the two farmers, Peter McLean and Tobin Porter-Brown. The interns will play a vital role in all aspects of vegetable production. Tasks will range from high tunnel construction, systems development, crop care (cultivation, weeding, and watering), harvesting, and post-harvest handling (packing and delivery). There will also be an opportunity to work on a directed project that would be both beneficial to the farm and engaging for the intern, which would completed by the end of the summer.
An intern can expect to work hard but have a lot of fun at the same time. The farmers will be working in tandem with interns and an emphasis will be given towards developing an enjoyable working experience.
It is not required for a Book & Plow intern to have prior farming experience but applicants need to be aware that farming can be physically challenging and you might be pleasantly tired at the end of the day. Farm days go from 7am to 5pm with an hour for lunch. Interns are expected to be prompt and ready to work. An ideal candidate will enjoy working outside (it can get hot in the summer), has a willingness to do the task at hand, will like to work with others, and have a sense of humor.
