Vela Summer Scholars
The Vela Scholars program is a year-round partnership between Amherst College and Amherst Regional Middle School designed to help students "rise and grow" to their full potential. The name Vela comes from the South African language Xhosa and literally means to rise and grow.
During the school year, Amherst students mentor and teach middle school students as an after-school teaching program. Each summer, around ten Amherst students participate in the Vela Summer Scholars program. For three weeks, these interns facilitate an intensive enrichment program for incoming seventh and eighth graders.
The Vela Summer Scholars internship is open to first-years, sophomores, and juniors. It runs in the month of July and includes a stipend and on-campus housing.
