Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my project qualifies for SCEF?
The Student Community Engagement Fund (SCEF) is a source of funding that will provide student groups and individual students funding and support for initiatives and programming that will strengthen the culture of community engagement at Amherst College. Not sure what community engagement is, try this definition, and if you still have questions, just contact us at the CCE.
What types of programs and initiatives does SCEF fund?
Over the past two years, SCEF has funded more than 50 different programs and initiatives from student groups and individuals. We are always looking to fund creative, thoughtful, and important programs and intiatives. For a list of programs and initiatives that were funded, visit the Projects Funded page. .
To be considered for funding at a meeting, all applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Sunday for review on Monday. The committee meets on Monday at 7:00 p.m. with the applicants. All applications received after the deadline will be reviewed the following week. Please note that SCEF will not fund any events or programs that occur prior to the application being submitted.
When do I get notified whether I have been awarded the funding?
Decisions will be released on Tuesday no later than midnight.
When does the SCEF committee meet?
The SCEF committee meets on Mondays at 7:00 p.m. to review applications. The committee will not review applications that are received after the Sunday, 5:00 p.m. deadline or applications with no representative at the Monday meeting. If you are not able to attend the review on Monday, it is your responsibility to ask that the application be reviewed the following week.
Do I get to meet with the student committee anytime before or after the award information is announced?
If you have questions about the funding application, funding process, or about your idea, you are more than welcome to talk to a member of staff. Call the CCE (413.542.5140) to schedule an appointment.
Will I get reimbursed for an event that qualifies for SCEF but that I already paid for?
Funding is not available for events that have already taken place. For example, if you have an event on Saturday and THEN apply for funding for the following week, SCEF will not review your application. It is best to submit your application and request as early as possible.
Does the CCE expect feedback from me or my group after the completion of the project?
Absolutely. In order to best figure out how we can better serve the campus community, we rely on feedback from participants. All SCEF recipients are required to fill a post-event survey and submit a budget demonstrating what was used and allocated. Failure to submit this information will result in a suspension of eligibilty for future funding.
How long do i have to submit receipts?
Generally, you will have two calendar weeks from the time of the event to submit ALL receipts for reimbursement (out of pocket expenses) and a reimbursement form.
What if I don't have cash on me to pay for the entire event?
There are a number of instances when you will may not need to pay for expenses. Some examples include charges to OAS (print shop) and Catering. For more information visit the SCEF Award Information page.
