Course Catalog: 2018-19

The Five College Certificate in Logic brings together aspects of logic from dif­ferent disciplines within the curriculum: Philosophy, Mathematics, Computer Science, and Linguistics. The Certificate offers an opportunity for students to pursue an interest in logic as a complement to their majors. The program is designed to acquaint students with the uses of logic and initiate them in the profound mysteries and discoveries of modern logic.

To earn the Five College Certificate in Logic, a student must take six courses in logic from any of the Five Colleges. No more than four courses can be counted toward the Certificate from any single one of the above disciplines. At least two courses must be taken at an advanced level (500 or above at University of Massachusetts, 300 or above at Amherst College, Hampshire Col­lege, or Mount Holyoke College, or Smith College. At least one course should expose students to the basic metatheory of first-order logic including incompleteness. Courses satisfying this requirement include:

Smith: PHIL 220
Amherst: MATH 385
UMass Amherst: PHIL 513, 514
Mount Holyoke: PHIL 327

Students must receive grades of at least B in each course counting toward the Certificate.
