THE PHI BETA KAPPA SOCIETY

THE PHI BETA KAPPA SOCIETY

Massachusetts Beta Chapter.  Phi Beta Kappa is the nation’s oldest, most prestigious honor society, celebrating excellence in the liberal arts and championing freedom of thought.  Amherst’s chapter, the second oldest in the state, has elected students since 1853.  The students elected to membership in this honor society are recognized for their superlative academic achievement and wide-ranging intellectual curiosity.  A preliminary election of a very small number of students occurs at the end of the junior year, and the main election takes place at Commencement time of senior year. Names of those who were elected early are indicated with an *.
