Gerald R. Fink ’62 Bioscience Symposium 2018

Amherst Leads: Health Care Policy, Careers, and Science

The Gerald R. Fink ’62 Bioscience Symposium for 2018 will be held on January 25 in the Cole Assembly Room of Converse Hall. This is the tenth annual symposium and is sponsored by the Amherst College Class of 1962.

The following speakers will be featured:

  • George W. Carmany ’62, hospital chairman, health care investor and member of the Advisory Committee on Education of the Harvard Medical School

  • Gerald R. Fink ’62, Margaret and Herman Sokol Professor and the American Cancer Society Professor of Genetics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology; founding member and former director of the Whitehead Institute

  • Lee Francis ’83, president and CEO of Erie Family Health Center, and assistant professor of clinical medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

  • Edward F.X. Hughes ’62, a physician and founder of the Center for Health Services and Policy Research, and professor of strategy and health enterprise management at thre Kellogg School of Management and preventive medicine at Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University

  • Emily Jackson ’13, doctoral student in biology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and former research technician at Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

  • David M. Lawrence ’62, national health policy commentator and former chairman and chief executive officer of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Kaiser Foundation hospitals 

  • Niyi Odewade ’17, cardiology research assistant at Tufts Medical Assistant and member of the Kidney Disease and Screening Awareness Program (KDSAP) national policy committee.

  • Gary Ruvkun, molecular biologist at Massachusetts General Hospital, professor of genetics at Harvard University,  and winner of the Lasker and Gruber Prizes
