Date: Wednesday, March 5

Time: 8:00 p.m.

Description: Rick Swartz '72, President of Strategic Solutions Washington, is a nationally recognized strategist on a range of major domestic and international public policy issues. Mr. Swartz specializes in crafting broad "strange bedfellow" coalitions to tackle some of the most important public policy issues in the 21 st century, including immigrant rights and policies. In 1981, Mr. Swartz founded the National Immigration Forum, the nation's most influential advocacy organization on behalf of immigrants and refugees, composed of a broad-based coalition of national and community-based organizations. As President of the Forum until 1990, Mr. Swartz played leading roles in organizing bipartisan coalitions from constituencies across the country to secure legal status for over 4 million refugees and undocumented immigrants, to establish effective opposition to the “English Only” movement, and to ensure scores of immigrant leaders and organizations a place in important policy debates.

Carol Swain is a Professor of Law and Politics at Vanderbilt University. Before joining Vanderbilt in 1999, Professor Swain was a tenured associate professor of politics and public policy at Princeton University.  Her highly acclaimed book, Black Faces, Black Interests: The Representation of African Americans in Congress received the 1994 Woodrow Wilson prize for the best book published in the U.S. on government, politics or international affairs. Her most recent book is Debating Immigration (ed). Professor Swain has been concerned with the problem of illegal immigration, especially how it may cut against the interests of African Americans.
