“The Case for Polarized Politics”

Description: Jeffrey Bell will give a talk drawn from his latest book titled The Case for Polarized Politics. This talk will be on Friday, September 28, at 8:00 PM in Lewis Sebring Commons, Valentine Hall. Jeffrey Bell is currently the director of policy and head of the Gold Is Money campaign for the American Principles Project, a Washington-based advocacy group. He was president of Lehrman Bell Mueller Cannon, an economic and political forecasting company, from 1988-2000. He developed former Governor Reagan’s first proposals for Federal tax and budget reduction, and was later a proponent of the Kemp-Roth tax cut bill. Mr. Bell was the 1978 Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate seat in New Jersey. He was a prominent member of both the Ronald Regan and Richard Nixon presidential campaign. Bell has authored several articles for many publications, most recently the Wall Street Journal, the Weekly Standard, and National Review. He is the author of The Case for Polarized Politics: Why America Needs Social Conservatism (2012) and Populism and Elitism: Politics in the Age of Equality (1992). Description: Diana Schaub will be giving a talk entitled “Learning to Love Lincoln: Frederick Douglass’ Journey from Grievance to Gratitude”. This talk will be on Saturday, September 29, at 9:30 AM, in Lewis Sebring Commons, Valentine Hall. Diana J. Schaub, 2011-12 Garwood Teaching Fellow, Department of Politics, Princeton University, is a professor of political science at Loyola University Maryland and a member of the Hoover Institution’s task force on The Virtues of a Free Society. She is the author of Erotic Liberalism: Women and Revolution in Montesquieu’s “Persian Letter” (1995) and editor, along with Amy and Leon Kass of What So Proudly We Hail: The American Soul in Story, Speech, and Song (2011). Schaub is a frequent contributor to opinion journals such as The Claremont Review of Books, The Weekly Standard, National Affairs, and The New Atlantis and the author of a number of book chapters and articles in the fields of political philosophy and American political thought. James Taranto is editor of OpinionJournal.com and author of its popular Best of the Web Today column. In August 2007, he was named a member of The Wall Street Journal's editorial board. Before the launch of the Web site in 2000, he was the Journal's deputy editorial features editor. He joined the Journal in 1996 as an assistant editorial features editor after spending five years as an editor at City Journal, the Manhattan Institute's quarterly of urban public policy. He has also worked for the Heritage Foundation, United Press International, Reason magazine and KNX News Radio in Los Angeles. He is co-editor of "Presidential Leadership: Rating the Best and the Worst in the White House" (Wall Street Journal Books, 2004). He attended California State University, Northridge. Jay Cost got his start in political commentary in 2004, when he started his own blog. In 2005, he was hired by RealClearPolitics to be their principal elections analyst. He moved over to the Weekly Standard in 2010, where he is now a staff writer. HarperCollins published his first book, Spoiled Rotten: How The Politics of Patronage Corrupted The Once Noble Democratic Party And Now Threatens The American Republic. He has a B.A. with high distinction in government and history from the University of Virginia and an M.A. in political science from the University of Chicago.
