“Stop Whining About Hollywood and the Media!”

Description: Rob Long will give a talk titled “Stop Whining about Hollywood and the Media!”. This talk will feature Mr. Long’s pitch to conservatives to “stop whining” about the media landscape since he believes that the moment is ripe and the situation open, for conservatives to tell their kinds of stories. The talk will be on Friday, September 26, at 8:00 PM, in Lewis Sebring Commons, Valentine Hall. Rob Long is a satirist and longtime contributing editor for National Review. He currently writes the column The Long View. During the Clinton years he anonymously penned the column Letters from Al. He is also the Co-Founder of Ricochet.com, a center-right news and commentary website. Rob Long is also widely known for his work in the entertainment industry, first as a screenwriter, then an Emmy and Golden Globe nominated executive producer on the popular television show Cheers. He has created and produced several other shows, most recently the comedy Sullivan & Sons. This talk is open to the public and sponsored by American Founding.

Description: Christopher DeMuth will give a talk titled “Can the Executive State be Tamed?”. This talk will focus on the unprecedented delegations of lawmaking power from Congress to the Executive, and audacious assertions of legislative power by the Executive in recent years. He will offer a new angle on the causes of executive supremacy and a few suggestions for restorative reform. This talk will be on Saturday, September 28, at 9:30 AM, in Lewis Sebring Commons, Valentine Hall. Christopher DeMuth is a distinguished fellow at the Hudson Institution in Washington D.C. He was president of the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research from 1986-2008 and D.C. Searle Fellow at AEI from 2008-2011. Previously he served in the administrations of Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon, practiced law at Sidley & Austin and at the Consolidated Rail Corporation. Mr. DeMuth is a graduate of Harvard College and the University of Chicago Law School. This talk is open to the public and sponsored by American Founding.

Description: Jim Stoner will give a talk titled “What is the Moral Basis of the Free Economy”. Mr. Stoner will raise this question at a time when conservatives tend to argue that the free economy produces outcomes that are better. But they may be as inclined as the Left to leave out the question of what makes this regime of freedom in principle good or rightful, even when we will not always know the outcome. This talk will be on Saturday, September 27, at 11:00 AM, in Lewis Sebring Commons, Valentine Hall. Jim Stoner is a Professor of Political Science at Louisiana State University. He is the author of Common-Law Liberty: Rethinking American Constitutionalism (2003), and Common-Law and Liberal Theory: Coke, Hobbes, and the Origins of American Constitutionalism (1992), as well as a number of articles and essays. Jim Stoner is a Senior Fellow of the Witherspoon Institute where he has co-edited two books. He served on the National Council on the Humanities from 2002-2006. He earned his B.A. from Middlebury College and a M.A. and Ph.D in Political Science from Harvard University. This talk is open to the public and sponsored by American Founding.
