What Do Our Public Schools Need?
On January 20-21, 2009, the Amherst College Colloquium Series on Public Education featured Jay P. Greene, Endowed Chair and Head of the Department of Education Reform at the University of Arkansas, and Jennifer Hochschild, the Henry LaBarre Jayne Professor of Government and Professor of African and African American Studies at Harvard University.
Professor Hochschild has published a number of important scholarly studies, best known of which is Facing Up to the American Dream: Race, Class and the Soul of the Nation, and more recently, The American Dream and the Public Schools and What's Fair? American Beliefs about Distributive Justice. Professor Greene has been the one of the most productive of the polemicists advocating for changing the public schools. He has many articles and essays and a recent book, Education Myths: What Special Interest Groups Want You To Believe About Our Schools.
