The open curriculum demands that each student have a close working relationship with a knowledgeable insider who can help students navigate the academic terrain. All students receive one-on-one academic advising from a professor who helps the student establish and refine short- and long-term academic goals, and select courses that will help meet those objectives. In addition the faculty advisor can direct the student to the social, residential life, and administrative services available, as needed.

Amherst College offers a variety of services to support the academic work of students. In addition to the advising and teaching support provided by the Faculty, assistance is also made available through these services: Quantitative Skills and Peer Tutoring, Academic and English-as-Second Language (ESL) Writing Services, Academic Services for Students with Disabilities, Reading & Study Skills Seminar (fall semester), and Math Review during winter break. Students who have used these support services have consistently recommended them highly.
