Fabiana Kreines '12 won the Tieman Research Prize for Best Undergraduate Poster at the 21st N.E.U.R.O.N conference on Sunday November 6th 2011. The conference was held at Quinnipiac University in Hamden CT (November 7, 2011).

Rifkin, Joanna '09
is the first author on a new paper to appear in the July 2012 issue of The American Naturalist, a prominent journal in evolution and ecology. In the paper, she uses a meta-analysis approach to examine the relationship between animal group size and parasite transmission. Rifkin conducted her senior thesis research with Professor Ethan Temeles while at Amherst; currently she is pursuing her PhD in the Program in Genetics and Genomics at Duke University.

Watson Fellowship for the 2008-2009 academic year, allowing him to engage in a year of independent study and travel abroad.  Ryan's fellowship explored health care in the post-genocidal societies of Bosnia, Herzegovina, Rwanda, and Cambodia.

was a recipient of the 2007 Winston Churchill Foundation Scholarship for graduate study [Kipp A. Weiskopf '07 is a co-recipient, and the first time two people from the same school have ever won!]. “The program, established in 1959, offers American students of exceptional ability and outstanding achievement the opportunity to pursue graduate studies in engineering, math, or the sciences at Churchill College, the University of Cambridge [UK]”.Before entering medical school, Colin spent his time studying cancer biology at Cambridge for a year in the laboratory of Dr. Ashok Venkitaraman, a faculty member of the Cambridge Dept of Oncology. Dr. Venkitaraman studies the causes of cancer, in particular how misregulation of chromosome number and/or the cell reproduction cycle can make cells more vulnerable to becoming cancerous. Colin is now pursuing his M.D. at Washington University in St. Louis.

'07 conducted research as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Senior in the summer of 2006 in the lab of Professor Ethan Clotfelter which has led to publication as co-author of "Cerebral lateralization and its relationship to phylogeny and aggression in anabantoid fishes" in Brain, Behavior and Evolution 69:169-175 (2007). Elizabeth will be starting a PhD program in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Cornell University in the fall of 2007.

was a 2006-2007 recipient of a Winston Churchill Foundation Scholarship for graduate study. Shak, Joshua R. '06 presented his thesis research at the Botanical Society of America 2006 meeting in Chico, California. Josh is a co-author with Dr. R. A. Levin and Prof. Miller on "Evolutionary relationships in tribe Lycieae (Solanaceae)" Horticulturae (ISHS) 745:225-240 (2007). Josh works as a research assistant in Dr. Martin Blaser's Lab in the Department of Medicine, Division of infectious Diseases and Immunology at the NYU School of Medicine.  He is collaborating on a project researching the possible connection between the stomach bacteria Helicobacter pylori and appetite control hormones.

Rodriguez, Alison C. '05 works at Dana Farber Cancer Institute with BRCA1 gene and its protein products to figure out what its deletion does and how it influences risk for breast cancer. Alison published her Honors thesis in a co-authored article entitled "Behavioral changes in fish exposed to phytoestrogens" in the journal Environmental Pollution144:833-839 (2006).
Shaw, Kathryn C. '05 is on an NSF graduate fellowship at Michigan State University, in the Holekamp laboratory, working on a PhD in Animal Behavior. Speer, Rachel E. '05 finished her two-year post-bac research training fellowship at NIH, begun in May of 2006 in the laboratory of Miles Herkenham '70, in the Section on Functional Neuroanatomy in the NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health).  Rachel has begun her PhD program in Neuroscience at Cornell's Weill Medical campus, doing her first rotation under Stewart Anderson '84.

McGaughey, David M. '04 is working towards his PhD at Johns Hopkins Medical School.
Savage, Anna E. '04 presented parts of her thesis research at the Society for the Study of Evolution 2004 meeting in Fort Collins, Colorado. Professor Jill Miller also presented aspects of Anna's research at the Botanical Society of America 2006 and the VI International Solanaceae Conference meetings. Anna is co-author with Professor Miller on "Gametophytic self-incompatibility in Lycium parishii (Solanaceae): allelic diversity, genealogical structure, and patterns of molecular evolution at the S-RNase locus" in Heredity 96:434-444 (2006). Anna also is a co-author on "Association of ploidy and sexual system in Lycium californicum (Solanaceae)" in Evolution 59:2048-2055 (2005).   Anna began her PhD in fall 2005 in Dr. Kelly Zamudio's lab in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Cornell University. Anna was also the recipient of a National Science Foundation Predoctoral Graduate Research Fellowship.
Stanton-Geddes, John L. '04 started his PhD studies in the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior at University of Minnesota in fall of 2006. His research interests are in plant-insect and multitrophic interactions, and adaptive responses to climate change. John is co-author on a 2007 paper with Assistant Professor Jill S. Miller: "Gynodioecy in Lobelia siphilitica and L. spicata (Lobeliaceae) from western Massachusetts" Journal of the Torrey Botanical Society 134:349-361.
