American documentary photographer Susan Meiselas lectures at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22, 2013, in Stirn Auditorium, 115 Mead Art Museum, Amherst College.


meiselas.jpgSince the 1970’s, Susan Meiselas has boldly used her camera to document private and public events in the world, while also exploring, often collaboratively, the many possible meanings of photographic documentation. She has produced eight books on topics including the Nicaraguan Revolution, the work of carnival strippers, the photographic history of Kurdistan and the history of visual encounters with the indigenous Dani people of Papua, Indonesia. She has also co-directed two films. Meiselas joined Magnum Photos in 1976. She was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in 1992, and has won numerous other awards, including the Cornell Capa Infinity Award in 2005 and the Harvard Arts Medal in 2011.
