Petition for ASLC Major Course Credit

Use the form below to petition for ASLC major course credit. Courses that require a petition for credit include (1) Asian Language or Content courses taken at colleges and universities outside the Five Colleges (including study abroad programs and courses taken elsewhere by transfer students) and (2) Asian Languages and Civilizations-related courses taken in departments other than ASLC at any institution (including Amherst College).

Students who have taken Asian Languages and Civilizations courses outside the Five College Consortium (including ASLC courses taken in study abroad programs and ASLC courses taken by transfer students at other institutions) must petition the department to receive approval to count those courses toward the major. In general, a course taught in an Asian Languages/Civilizations department by Asian Languages/Civilizations faculty at a college or university stands a very good chance of being accepted for the major. Approval for the major is not automatic, however; you must petition the department by completing this form.*

Completing the form requires the following:

  1. Indicate Institution: Please provide the name of the institution at which the course was taken and, if applicable, the study abroad program.
  2. Course information and request for additional major requirements:  Please provide the course name/number and semester it was taken. You can also indicate if you'd like a course to receive credit for a particular concentration area.
  3. Description: Please include a description of the requirements completed for the course: papers, readings, exams, etc.
  4. Attached document: Please attach—as a single PDF—copies of the syllabus (syllabi), reading list(s), and papers you completed. (If you are petitioning for more than one course, please collate the PDFs in the order you entered them on the form.)

Please petition the department in a timely manner; if for some reason the petition is denied, you will need to make up the course(s) at Amherst.

Please note that courses listed in the Related Courses section at the end of the Asian Languages and Civilizations section of the college course catalog do not require a petition to count for ASLC major credit.

If you need more information about how to petition the department, please ask your advisor.

*If you are petitioning for credit for more than three courses, please complete an additional form.
